Lens fully closed so viewfinder is dark and secondly your auto focus will not work either in this condition ( not enough light reaching the sensor at the bottom of the mirror box ). Problem is the aperture control mechanism called 'the base plate set' situated next to the mirror box in the body , which is faulty. This can be repaired but requires removing of the mirror box so that you can access the small drive which has a faulty gear and which drives the aperture mechanism. I charge +- $150 to repair this common problem.

Unfortunately my camera repair business in not situated in US. But any large US city will have outfits perfectly capable of fixing your camera. Use 'yellow pages' to locate one or two places and then describe the fault using my my diagnosis /description of the fault and get a quote. As I said this is one of the commonest problems with these older auto focus film Minoltas.

Minolta MAXXUM 3xi the view finder is very dark(bought second hand)

I no the older Minolta's had an aperture problem the pictures when zooming out after they were developed were very dark. But inside and wide angel shots always came out nice I had to have the aperture base plate replaced on my Minolta Maxxum 3000i my point and shooter, I wish this helped but it sounds like something different in your case it also maybe the aperture acting different in your camera than it did in 1 of mines.

My Minolta Maxxum 3Xi has a dark picture in the view finder. It won't focus on anything because everything in the view finder is dark, if not completely black. I was told it might be the aperture ring. ...

The aperture ring is the right diagnosis. The aperture mechanism has a broken piece that can be repaired by a competent repair shop for under $75. There are no parts available for Konica Minolta cameras since Sony bought them - the part can be rebuilt.

Minolta Maxxum 450si - dark images through view finder

The aperture mechanism needs repair - though most parts are no longer available because Sony purchased Minolta, this is a problem that can be repaired by a competent independent repair shop.
