This is my friends camera so I dont know if it was ever mishandled but the camera works fine however the screen is very dark and you need to use a flashlight to see the screen. If you press the DISP button it is very clear that the LCD screen turns off as it should. All features work on the camera but is there a way to increase the light intensity on the screen? I searched online but havent found any clue as of yet. thanks!

We have a Canon A520 and it was having all the symptoms noted. Searched for a resolution on numerous sites including the Canon Support site. While on the Canon Support site, I found an FAQ on "How to RESET the A520". Turn camera on, find and hold MENU button for 5+ seconds until "Reset settings to default?" screen appears. Arrow over to OK and press the SET button. When we did this the battery low indicator showed, replaced batteries with standard alkaline batteries. Everything functions properly, with no additional problems for the past 5 days. I guess the camera just lost its mind and had to be defaulted and rebooted, hope this helps.
pershaps that the cable inside to power the lcd is defect. or it could also be that the backlight is defect . those things can be repaired (don't do it your self) but costs could well be higher than buying a new camera
Well, there is a Powershot A520 on eBay right now that has a good LCD screen but does not work. It would be a good deal since a new part may be fairly expensive. Item number: 160196261124. You will need a good cross point screwdriver and tweezers to make this repair
hey guys. there is no solution that you can do it for yourself. the best solution i can give for you is take it to service centre. here in india we get charged nearly 1800rupees for servicing the lens portions.
I have a "broken" A520 that needs a new LCD. I really don't want to spend another $90 to get it fixed so may be willing to sell it for parts. Let me know. I don't know about any guide for disassembly however.
