Put the CD in the optical drive of the Acer laptop.
{ CD/DVD drive. Just push the button on the outside of the drive, and the optical drive tray will come out partway. Then Gently pull the tray out all the way.
Close the optical drive tray. (Gently push the tray back into the laptop) If after a few seconds the movie doesn't start, go to My Computer, and DOUBLE-click on the drive letter associated with the optical drive. (CD/DVD drive)
(May be drive letter D: or E:}
[ Windows XP: Left-click on Start, then My Computer
Windows Vista and Windows 7: Left-click on the Windows logo button, then on Computer, {The Windows logo button took the place of Start ]

State the Model Number of your Acer laptop, and I will give you a link to a free User Manual, from Acer Support.
( The Model Number is on the bottom of the laptop in a white sticker. It is above the Serial Number. Do Not give out the Serial Number on a public forum such as this. Only to an authorized Acer dealer, or repair shop. S/N = Serial Number )
It's actually a manufacturing problem. The dvd metal case atually
touches the the interior metal case of the laptop causing a
shortcircuit. Solution: Remove The DVD drive from its place by removing
the screw of the drive from the back of laptop and then pull the drive
gently out from the laptop case. At the end of DVD case you can see the
metalic extension, with a little hole. Cover that entire area with
something, i used a sticker, but let that hole free, so you can put the
screw back in once you put the DVD drive back in to the laptop case.
That's it. If your DVD drive has no other defects, it should work
hi..if u have a Windows XP installer just put in the CD/DVD player then auto run the win XP and make install the new windows/OS and make a choice leave the current files if you to re cover the files using a new install OS/Windows..Good Luck and Have a Nice Day...
Try to use another DVD. you told you tried you old DVD from your toshiba. maybe is not compatible.. try in another.. then use your DVD in another laptop if the same from problem.check your board and DVD connection...if this under warranty bring to warranty..
if in Bios also can not detect this is hardware problem...
ok " get a CD/ DVD cleaning disk , you pop that in and it will clean the lens inside, and they don't cost much, but do so much
good. happy movie watching
first you'll need to find out if it's the lens adjustment or a laser problem. this will require you to open up the drive, and test it running open, use protective glasses to shield your eyes from the laser.
buying a new one is faster less time consuming and about 20 dollars. Removing it and connecting the new one, anyone can do 4 screws, and to diff cable that only fit one way.
