Overheating may ocurr if the air vent intakes are obstructed, or when the cooling system is defective.
A typical symptom is the computer shutting down suddenly and turning off completely for no reason.
To start you need to ensure that the laptop is not turning off becauseof a system problem.Sudden shut down can be caused by differentsoftware and hardware problems. There are several ways to check thisout.
You can for example start the laptop using a boot disk, or starting aWindows setup disk, and then leaving the system on for one or twohours. If the system does not turn off after starting from disk, thenthe problem is not overheating.
If for example you decide to use a Windows setup disk to do the test, proceed in the following way:
- Start the system with the Windows disk inside.
- Choose to "start system from CD" when asked.
- Do not choose to install or repair Windows, just start the system and leave it hanging on for some times.
- Ensure that the computer does not go on standby in the meanwhile.
Another way to check if the problem is overheating is by using a software like SpeedFan
to monitor the system temperatures.
That would be a better way to check if the system is overheating, as it can give you precise indications on system temperature.
If the system starts and stays on long enoug to install and then to start SpeedFan, then install the software and turn it on. If temperature before shut down is near to critical value, then the problem is overheating.
This last method can be used only if the system stays on long enough to start Windows and run the software.
If the problem is overheating , that means that the heatsink fan mustbe replaced, before overheating ends up damaging CPU or motherboard.
