Hi. All of the sudden my laptop started shutting down on it's own. While I'm in the middle of using it, the monitor will suddenly get black streaking across it and it will cut off. Sometimes it will just flash the streaks and stay on, but most of the time it will shut off when it does this. Any ideas what may be the problem or solution?

Dear what you tried is best only apart from there no solutions from front end, check your system is rebooting or not. Please take backup of all data from your harddisk then put recovery C.D for restore your laptop O/S .
The presentation power scheme is used when you are giving a briefing using the PC as your slide show. So the presentation power scheme will never shut off the monitor or the hard drive, don't want it to shut down in the middle of a briefing. However, leaving it in that state for long periods of time may cause the CPU to overheat and shut itself down for protection. A better scheme for quick boot up would be Home/Office. Turn monitor off after 20 minutes and "never" for hard disk. This way it will save energy (therefore heat) and you will have a quick boot up. If you are using XP Pro, there is also an option to automatically put it in standby when you close the lid of your monitor. Hope this helps. If you have any questions let me know... I think your fan might be broken....if the fan doesn't cool the pc,the processor or the chipset will automatically shut down the pc to prevent burning hardware.Or your hard drive might keep crashing.Oh yeah and abstract from this i don't recommend ever using mcaffe
you should download and install the software for your computer model that controls the functions like increasing & decreasing screen brightness, switch between screens etc. Try reinstallimg the OS using the recovery CD ROM that came with your computer
usually shut down when idle(idle means no key or mouse activity).........left click mouse in any space on desktop, select properties,in properties window select screensaver and lower in the screen youll see power settings..select it...in power schemes change time best suited or select never.
Sorry to hear of the Tennis Ball Masacre.
I believe your problem to be twofold in nature.
First the glass in side of the LCD screen is very fragile and the tennis ball most likely ruptured it. the streaks are most likle the liquid crystal solution leaking out. the dark streaks represent the absence of the fluid.
Secondly, the monitor shut down appears to be from the back light / inverter circuitry. Sounds like it may be time for a new display.
$40 to $60 for the inverter board and $80 or more for a new display screen, you may as well go the couple of extra dollars and get a new monitor.
Hope this puts it in perspective for you. Sorry it is so bleak!
