Random shutting down

Hi. All of the sudden my laptop started shutting down on it's own. While I'm in the middle of using it, the monitor will suddenly get black streaking across it and it will cut off. Sometimes it will just flash the streaks and stay on, but most of the time it will shut off when it does this. Any ideas what may be the problem or solution? Thank you.

Hi, i have a Denon PMA 735 R amplifier which shuts down when volume increases suddenly.

Sounds like you have output transistor problems. Does it have a red protection light that comes on when it shuts down? If it does it will need serviced.

How do I know if my laptop is overheating.

Overheating may ocurr if the air vent intakes are obstructed, or when the cooling system is defective.

A typical symptom is the computer shutting down suddenly and turning off completely for no reason.

To start you need to ensure that the laptop is not turning off becauseof a system problem.Sudden shut down can be caused by differentsoftware and hardware problems. There are several ways to check thisout.

You can for example start the laptop using a boot disk, or starting aWindows setup disk, and then leaving the system on for one or twohours. If the system does not turn off after starting from disk, thenthe problem is not overheating.

If for example you decide to use a Windows setup disk to do the test, proceed in the following way:

  • Start the system with the Windows disk inside.
  • Choose to "start system from CD" when asked.
  • Do not choose to install or repair Windows, just start the system and leave it hanging on for some times.
  • Ensure that the computer does not go on standby in the meanwhile.

Another way to check if the problem is overheating is by using a software like SpeedFan to monitor the system temperatures.
That would be a better way to check if the system is overheating, as it can give you precise indications on system temperature.
If the system starts and stays on long enoug to install and then to start SpeedFan, then install the software and turn it on. If temperature before shut down is near to critical value, then the problem is overheating.

This last method can be used only if the system stays on long enough to start Windows and run the software.

If the problem is overheating , that means that the heatsink fan mustbe replaced, before overheating ends up damaging CPU or motherboard.

My HP laptop screen will not do anything. The first time this happened, I was in the middle of something and the screen suddenly became a bunch of black and white random-ness. I shut it down, and tried...

Perform the following:

1. Disconnect the AC Adapter.
2. Remove the Battery.
3. Hold the Power button down for 30 seconds to 1 minute.
4. Reconnect the AC adapter and do NOT connect the battery now.
5. Turn on the Notebook power.

If turned on, shut down the Notebook, insert the Battery and turn it on again. That's it.

With an extensive use of the notebook, some times notebook would store some static charges which indeed will stop the notebook from powering up or charging the battery.

Performing above procedure will not effect any personal data or delete any pictures from the hard drive on your notebook.

First thing I'd check is for a BIOS update for your computer under the Acer support pages (acer.com). In some cases, thermal control updates are included in newer version of the BIOS, if it is a manufacturing problem.
Goto http://www.cpuid.com/hwmonitor.php and download Hardware Monitor, start the computer and immediately run the hardware monitor app to check how high the temperature on the CPU gets before it shuts down.
Continuing use under this condition may damage your Windows installation because of the sudden shutdown.

Standy By Going off/Computer shutting down

The presentation power scheme is used when you are giving a briefing using the PC as your slide show. So the presentation power scheme will never shut off the monitor or the hard drive, don't want it to shut down in the middle of a briefing. However, leaving it in that state for long periods of time may cause the CPU to overheat and shut itself down for protection. A better scheme for quick boot up would be Home/Office. Turn monitor off after 20 minutes and "never" for hard disk. This way it will save energy (therefore heat) and you will have a quick boot up. If you are using XP Pro, there is also an option to automatically put it in standby when you close the lid of your monitor. Hope this helps. If you have any questions let me know... I think your fan might be broken....if the fan doesn't cool the pc,the processor or the chipset will automatically shut down the pc to prevent burning hardware.Or your hard drive might keep crashing.Oh yeah and abstract from this i don't recommend ever using mcaffe

It sounds like a thermal shut down when the processor over heats, one thing it might be is that the heat sink is not seated properly on the processor. When removing the heat sink make sure you have thermal paste to place between the processor and heat sink. That should give you a good starting point.
