Files disappeared from maxtor one touch iii mini

I cut/pasted pictures into a file on my Maxtor external mini harddrive. As soon as I hit copy, I attempted to rotate them right side up. I received an error that it would not rotate because it was a read only file (i had just hit copy and had not changed any of these settings). The error prompted on all pictures and then they disappeared. I cannot locate them anywhere on the computer. Out of the pictures left in the folder that I had just copied, I attempted to rotate another separately. It gave me the same error and then another several pictures disappeared. I tried to perform a search and they cannot be found. They also did not end up in my computer's recycle bin. It's as though they disappeared. Please help! I cut them from my memory card so they are no longer on my camera.

i received a reply to go to My Computer and unhide all files that i may have some sort of virus affecting pictures. I did this and i am still unable to find any of the pictures. as soon as they were copied i received the rotate error and they disappeared....any more ideas? i'm dumbfounded...

Okay. Don't use the camera's card and don't format it or continue to access it. I need to dig up a freeware undelete utility which is compatible with Vista. You should then be able to use the undelete utility to recover the deleted images on the camera's card.

Did you do a cut/paste or a copy/paste? Also, what operating system do you use?

Alrighty, I finally found the handy file undelete utility which I have successfully used in the past to undelete files on flash cards. The file is Restoration.exe, and it doesn't use an installer. Thus it is a completely stand-alone program. The author of this program says that it is compatible with all Windows OS through XP. It probably will work with Vista too. The program also is compatible with NTFS as well as FAT32 file systems. Here is a link to CNET.com where you can download it and then use it to try to recover the deleted files on your flash card:

Restoration

Once you have recovered the files on your flash card, copy and paste them to your hard disk. I never do cut and pastes from flash cards for fear of accidentally losing files. Copy and paste, and once you have verified that the files were successfully copied to your hard disk, then delete the files on your flash card if that is your preferred method. Yet I prefer to put the flash card back in my camera and then do a quick format of the card in order to delete all files on the flash card.

Anyway, hopefully this restoration utility will allow you to get those deleted images back. :-)

The Maxtor OneTouch III Mini Edition series ...i have a I/O device error and dont want to open...

If your external harddrive came with software, you may want to reinstall it. If not you may have to go the the website for the Maxtor One Touch 3 and download the driver for the unit.

You may also want to open the device manager and check to see if your usb port is having trouble. More than likely it is the driver itself>

I am attempting to transfer my files and documents from a Maxtor One touch mini iii that was operating on an old Dell Demension computer running windows XP to my new Dell Studio computer running Windows 7

With pc turned off plug the USB drive into new PC and boot it up. Now on new pc it should auto detect and install the USB drive. Now goto Computer and you will see your USB drive there. Open that up now its as easy as copying anything you like and pasting to whever you want to keep it on new pc

Copied files disappeared as soon as they were copied over

Did you try to copy one picture file to your mini harddrive then change it properties to archieve only? After that you can rotate it freely without that annoying message.

If that does not go as expected. Could be virus infection. Both your miniharddrive and your computer is infected. Some do it by changing it properties to read only then hide it.

You should first start disinfecting. The files can be view by clicking tools in My computer then set to view hidden files then start exploring your minihard drive. Some infection only affects picture files.

Just for the thought.

Light turns on but My Computer does not recognize the drive

Sounds like you lost the drivers for your external. W/ out an online PC you cannot download them either. Do you have a friend that could do this on their PC? That is the only way.

Hi, I lost user manual, need to restore files back to computer.

Provided that you can find your external drive using My Computer feature, double click on that drive icon and search the drive for the files you wish to put on the computer drive (C drive). If you right click the file or folder on the Maxtor external drive and then choose copy, you can go to the folder on the C drive that you want to paste them into, select it and then right click the folder icon and choose paste to put them into the folder. To make the process quicker, you might choose to paste all files and/or files from the Maxtor drive onto the computer desktop and then move them around later.

Maxtor Onetouch III mini edition

All you should have to do is copy your files from their present folder on your computer to the Maxtor drive; you can find the drive location by clicking on the My Computer icon; or you can drag the files from their present position to the Maxtor.

Maxtor one touch iii mini

You have a possible corrupted file. Open My Computer and right-click the drive icon. Click PROPERTIES in the menu. Click TOOLS. Click CHECK NOW. Click a check into the AUTOMATICALLY FIX FILE SYSTEM ERRORS box. Click START. The OS may tell you a reboot is required.
If all else fails, dump the data to some other storage device and use DISK MANAGER to delete the partion, make a new partition and format.
