Make sure your desktop PC and the laptop are in the same Workgroup. You can view and change these settings if you right click My Computer and click Properties. In case your laptop joins a domain or workgroup at work, you might want to only change your desktop to match your laptop's settings.
It doesn't work in share mode either...It prints the pages incorrectly. I have the hp3100 connected to my xp pc and my vista laptop connects to it via printer sharing on my network. the xp prints fine but the vista doesn't print ok due to lack of driver support for it.
I have to resort to print to pdf and then take the pdf to my xp for printing. Its a half *** solution but if anybody out there made his/her own driver please post.
