Clean Up scans a player\'s hard disk/memory card and removes any invalid links from the music library. It does not affect the working music files at all. It is recommended that you perform "Clean Up" first before formatting or reloading the player\'s firmware.
It is advisable for you to clean up your player regularly if you are frequently transferring files from you computer to your player or vice versa.

sorry to say the thing crashed and burned, luckily the warranty covered all but a 25.00 labor fee. After contacting creative they put me thru a four email rigamarole before issuing a RMA#,then another month to get it back. Good Luck
Sounds like it may be the index in your Music Library. Try going into Recovery Mode; remove battery, hold power switch to ON, replace battery, release power switch when the Recovery Mode screen appears on the screen. Run Option 1 CleanUP, after it completes run Option 4 Restart. You will get a Rebuilding Library screen when it reboots, that's normal, then it should go back to your startup screen.
