I have optiplex 780, On stsrt up the diagonistic lights 2,3 and 4 keep on blinking and no display comes on the monitor. According to Dell 780 manuals, a possible USB error may have occured and re connecting all cables should solve the problem. I have tried this solution many times but the problem remains there. What may be wrong ?? Please tell.

Shut down the computer, disconnect ALL USB connections front and back.

  1. Plug in just the keyboard USB cable and start the computer. If it does not work, try moving the USB plug for the keyboard and trying again. If you can't find ANY USB port that works, then your motherboard is probably fried.
  2. Once the computer comes up with just the keyboard, plug in the mouse and wait for it to work (should be almost immediately). If it does not work in one USB port, try another until it works... wait several seconds after plugging it in before deciding whether it works or not.
  3. Once you have a working keyboard and mouse, begin plugging in any other USB devices, one at a time and verifying that each device works. As with the keyboard and mouse, if it does not work in one port, try another.
    1. Note that some devices may take several seconds or up to a minute to fully be discovered and set up and you may have to respond to something on the screen.

Why is dell optiplex 780 lights 1 & 3 ok and power button amber?

An Amber blinking power button indicates a low voltage problem. This can be caused by a defective power supply or a defective motherboard.
Remove any PCI cards like modem, video card, sound card, etc... Remove the memory modules and disconnect cables to CD/DVD drives. Look at the USB ports to see if any are damaged.

Have optiplex 780, On start up the diagonistic

You could try unconnecting the USB hardware and then start the computer. But, with Dell you will most likely need to have the keyboard plugged in. Then if the computer starts, you can fit each item until it stops. But, the Dell USB controller is renowned for being weak. You may need a USB PCI card to continue using the computer, they are a lot cheaper than a replacement motherboard or a new computer.

Problem on Dell OptiPlex 780 Desktop

You are going to need to start your computer in safe mode and find the XP drivers that will work for your motherboard manually from the web (Assuming that there are any created for XP for that board)..

That blue screen you keep getting is because you don't have the correct driver loaded for something on the motherboard that it needs to boot correctly and your XP install couldn't find it on the web to install automatically.

Start your PC and press F8 several times until the boot menu comes up. Then select "Safe Mode with Networking".

Now start looking for your drivers here:
