I have the same problem, insert new batteries and the screen goes black. I even had the case on it the whole time and not in direct sunlight. Does any one know of anything i can do besides buy a new one.

Had you left it in direct sunlight for a long period or perhaps in a very hot car? Sounds like the LCD is damaged.

SOURCE: my ti 83 plus calculator wont go on

Hello,

First of all, and I mean no offense here, check that the batteries are inserted correctly, respecting the polarity +-+-. The flat part (bottom) of the battery is the one that sits on the protruding helix-like electrical terminal. Inside calculator, there is polarity diagram.

When you change batteries, the display contrast may become too dim (too light) for the user to see anything. In that case, it can be adjusted.

Adjusting the screen contrast. Here is how to do it.
There is a key labeled 2nd. It is blue on the TI84Plus, and yellow/orange on the TI83Plus.

  1. Press the [2nd] key and release it.
  2. Press the [UpArrow] key (the top of the long vertical key in the Malta Cross like group of keys) and HOLD.
  3. On the top right corner of the screen you will see a number, which tells you the degree of contrast.
  4. Release the [UpArrow] key when contrast is adequate for your viewing.
  5. If you darken the screen too much, lighten it by the same procedure, pressing the [DownArrow].( See #1 and 2 above)
The lack of screen contrast is the most frequent cause of 'malfunction'. Try readjusting contrast, as described above. If that does not solve the problem, post a comment to this thread detailing what you did and the calculator response and we will troubleshoot further.

Good luck.

That means that you know your calc crashed. This can be caused by taking out the batteries durring running time, happened just randomly. Well nothing to fear just press clear and it should go away but if it stays on that screen you have problems and is best to try some of these methods. Take out all the bateries and press and hold the on button for 30 seconds. Put the batteries back in and it should have reset. Warning you should archive everything incase this happens. To archive go to 2nd mem and hit enter to put a astrick next to the app (meaning archived)
