Question about Canon PowerShot S2 IS Digital Camera
Hey Everyone, First of All, please Don't Panic. The CCD ( sensor ) defect / Black screen of death problem is on the rise. Its becoming a common issue with the S2 IS owners. Send in the Camera with this completed form ( http://consumer.usa.canon.com/app/pdf/dealer/FSC.pdf ) Mailing Address CANON FACTORY SERVICE CENTER 1440 CHASE AVENUE Elk Grove Village, IL 60007 (630) 250-6500 Briefly explain the situation and request for a courtesy repair. Good news is that Canon is repairing the Problem at ZERO Charge. I'm certain that in the next few months Canon would issue an Advisory for a product recall as in the case of S1 IS. S2 IS is a beautiful camera and Canon's customer service is fabulous. Hence please don't spread negative stories about Canon. Regards, Varun A Proud S2 IS owner

I sent my S2 IS to canon they sent an estimate of $127. Sam arguement no reported advisory on this camera so can't reapir for free. after talkin to 3 different persons., cut the repair charges by 50%. But assured that if their is an advisory on this camera in future they will refund the cost I paid.

I think we need to read between the lines of what kumarvarun is saying.
I too had the "black screen of ", I too called Canon who told me there was no recall for the S2 IS and they could not guarantee a free repair - then I stepped out on faith, filled out the form linked in the above post explicitly requesting a courtesy repair, and I just got an e-mail that they are going to fix it at no charge. Very Happy! Clearly Canon is not comfortable committing to a free repair sight unseen, but they are doing their best to make it right.
Thanks kumarvarun.

Canon Service Center gave me a courtesy repair for my S2 IS. They made a prompt repair and sent it back within a week. Great service to say the least.
A week after my S2 IS crapped out, I bought a Rebel xTI 10MP. I love it too. Canon customer since 1975.

Customer service is NOT fabulous for this problem. They are only working on free repairs on the S1. I just called and talked to three different people that basically said they will send me a shipping label VIA email. Repair cost of $119 min. Or if I like "I" can buy a refurbished S3 for a mear $175 and pay an additional shipping of $10. They, 3 different people, assured me there is NO problem known for the S2.
Good luck Varun with you wonderful customer service because the rest of are still waiting. I was wanting a Rebel from Canon but there is NO way I will step out and get one now.

I am having the same problem with my S2 IS. Just called Canon and they said this is a known problem with the S1 IS, not the S2. But they told me to send in the camera for evaluation at their expense under the product advisory for the S1 IS. This link helped. Thanks.

I just called Canon, explained the problem I was having with my Powershot S2 IS (black LCD, not able to see through view finder), and mentioned I'd looked at several sites on-line outlining the same problem. I then simply asked if they would fix the problem for free. The gentleman asked me to hold for a minute, then came back and said they would fix it for free. He was super nice and very empathetic to the problem. I am very pleased with the canon customer service. Good luck to others with the same problem.

Canon is not fixing this problem for free for every one. Canon is in denial of this problem. After calling tech at1800-828-4040 they
told me to send in to factory service center with the form, I did
and they admitted problem with CCD but wanted $127 to fix. I called
to see if they would reconsider , they would not, still wanted $127. to fix. After what the camera cost to buy and fix a defective part,
I am not happy with Canon. I am buying a another brand. I wish
jeffrey1956 well getting help. Some are having better luck than I did.

Screen is dark when I power up the camera. I can see previous images but I cannot record anything. I have changed batteries with no good results. They power up everything but do not affect the recording of pics. Alex
The view finder and lcd screen is black when I try to take picture. I cannot locate a number to call cannon to get this problem fixed. Please help
Identical problem to Jeffrey1956's. When it doesn't boot properly, I knock the camera, battery side, against the heel of my hand quite firmly. It then normally boots, but sometimes I need to knock it a few times.
I suspect a dry solder joint on one of its PC boards. I need to know how to strip the covers off to take a peek inside.
I'm interested to hear that I'm not the only one with this problem. I'm upset with Canon as this happened about two months post guarantee.
Thanks,
Saffieinuk.
I can view the picture, I can change setting, but when I want to take picture i can not see anything. It more like if the lens is close with a cap. my camera is new i do not use very otten.
Same problem i am also facing. I can see images which are already taken but when i try to take snap balck screen appears......
No images in the view finder and LCD screen when in recording mode. I have similar problem. Sent the camera to canon, they won't repair it free of charge as they don't have any service advisory for this model. They have neen doing free repair for earlier models with similar problem. Call them
I have had exactly the same problem; able to view previous images but cannot view images while taking pictures. The camera had acted up a couple of months ago, but started working again. I figured it was just a fluke. The biggest concern came when my LCD screen went completely black during a recent 6,500 mile road trip across the United States! Luckily, we were on our last day of travel and I didn't have any important pics to take. I am extremely careful with my camera (keep it in the case when not in use, do not bang it around, etc.)and I do plan to contact Canon as I have only owned this camera for two years. I would expect a camera at this price range to last for more than two years!
I come in and search for Canon's solution once in a while, without any luck yet. It's unbelievable they are deaf and blind... Do something, Canon. You've given such a grief to so many customers. Probably our right to claim will expire in time, and so will Canon's trustworthiness.
I have same problem . camera works normaly and show picture on memory but do not show anything during recording.
