'79 GE lower baking coil not powered in Bake cycle
The problem started last week with the arcing of the lower baking coil of our July 1979 combination (micro & oven model J - KP97G serial MF980755M)GE oven... I replaced the same lower coil that I previously successfully replaced in 2001. Except this time, only the upper coil functions in the Bake mode although the oven Clean mode works great. I just replaced the oven switch WB22X5123 as recommended in lieu that there was no connection being made between the 2 'Bake' terminals and no visible wire connection problem was visible. I tested the new coil to the normal 17.8 ohms although the power across the lower coil terminals was only about 40 volts...The thermastat unit contacts looked ok and I cleaned the copper contacts. (just a note that we have not had a continuous red light on the bake light for some time and we have adjusted the oven temp dial to 50 degrees warmer than desired with success for years...) We would like to continue using our current oven for at least 5 years when we may replace some of our kitchen appliances. Please help. Thank You.

Same problem here on JKP15WOW1WW. The cycle starts like this:
1) Open circuit Breaker
2) Open oven panel and push ribbon connector to ERC. Replace planel.
3) Close circuit breaker
4) Run to oven, notice clock flashing some time but not 12:00 and start Bake. Bake button beeps and starts bake coil.
5) Within 5 minutes hear a beep and all buttons on panel are unresponsive. Bake continues. if oven light is on it continues to glow. Only button that responds with a beep (and not to clear bake or oven light) is Clear botton.
Rinse..wash..lather...repeat...
Usually, when an oven won't heat, it's because the bake element is burned out. The bake element is the black, pencil- thick tube at the bottom of the oven. When the oven heats, the element glows red. This element has an expected life-span of several years. It may last for only one; it may last for many more. When the element burns out, you need to replace it.
does the bake element come on at all? if so, try the oven out. do a bake @ 350 allow it to pre-heat, and see if once the pre-heat is comlete, id the broil shuts off. on many ovens at the beginning of the cycle during pre-heat both bake and broil elements are powered.
other than that it may be a control board, or a burnt and crossed wire in the harness.

I have just checked the baking guide in the manual and have found that it may not be us after all. (Maybe this is why they telll us to read the whole manual. Well, I never have) According to the cooking time for Baking, the range is very extensive. For example, an angel cake at 350 could take from 28-50 minutes, buscuits at 375-400 could take 8-16 minutes, layer cakes at 350-375 could take 25-40 minutes, pound cakes at 325-350 could take 45-70 minutes and fresh pies at 400-450 could take 35-60 minutes. Basically, the baking directions on the box means absolutely nothing to use Amana oven owners. We have no choice but to cook our food or baked goods until they are cooked, whenever that may be. :) Linda
