SOURCE: 1989 tw200 yamaha won't start

G'day egdbcs . Ok.now lets see.You say good spark,so i'm presuming you are doing the old sight test.Try bending the arm on a know good sparkplug about 5-6mm,earth the plug and kick'er in the guts(crank it over)Be very carefull , high voltage danger.If there's still a good spark it's safe to say that there will also be a good spark under pressure in the combustion chamber,speaking of which you should also do a compression test,anything over 100psi should be ok. as i'm not to sure of the extent of the re-build,hopefully the valves were lapped and checked for straight and true and valve seals replaced,if you notice oil on the tip of the spark plug you could have a leaking valve seal or oil seal .Try putting a small amount of fuel directly into the combustion chamber ,tighten up the spark plug ,install the plug cap and.......Yeah ..You guessed it ..."kicker in the guts".If all the abouve are correct and true it should fire up.If it runs for 5-10 seconds then stops you've got some sort of fuel starvation problem , could be dirt in the carb,blocked idle jet ,or air passage or even the needle could have come off it's clip,believe me with an old bike like yours anything could be worn and loose inside that carby.The only other thing to consider is the timing.There may be a good spark but is it happening at the right time inside the engine???. I'll leave it all in your capable hands EGDBCS.Hope this helps to solving your worries. Chow for now......Tilleydog..

SOURCE: 1983 yamaha xj 650 no spark already changed the

  • Do you see spark? If not, check the side stand kill switch. It kills the engine so that you don’t start out with the side stand down. If broken or out of adjustment, it would kill the spark. Check for a broken wire at the side stand switch and coupler. Try moving the side stand kill switch by hand. If that doesn’t work then wire a jumper around the switch to bypass it.
  • Is the handlebar kill switch on? Is it shorted out?
  • Are you getting power to the coils?
  • Check the fuses. How good is the battery? Try a jump start from your car battery.
  • Check the operation of the ignition switch and all kill switches with a volt ohmmeter. Check the wiring harness. Did a wire come unplugged? Are all wires clean and with solid connections? Any abraded or pinched wires? Is the bike in neutral and the neutral light is lit up? If no neutral light, check the neutral switch and neutral switch wire on center or side casing. If still no spark, get CDI system and coils checked at the dealers shop.

Stalls, loss of one or more cylinders. Now in shop first $700 to clean carburators and now second $700 to replace an electrical part because of the stalling. Is this crazy?

okay...these are general to Yamaha igniter systems...
so bike is in neutral...shows neutral, kill switch on...
Test each plug cap with a new spark plug...if one or more getting no spark....
Unhook the pickup coil harness and test the resistance (the P U coils located in left front crankcase cover with stator. If resistance tests out fine, ensure the connector is clean and connect.
Now test that both ignition coil packs primary and secondary resistances are within spec.
Verify the ignition coil packs are getting battery voltage to the primary terminal (often a red/white wire).
Ensure the igniter (the ignition black box) also called TCI is getting battery voltage on its supply.
Ensure all connectors clean to TCI.
The only other issue may be the interlocks are trying to shut down ignition....typically a black/white wire from the igniter goes to sidestand relay, tip over switch....both shut down ignition by grounding the control side of the TCI...could be they are partially grounding allowing minimal ignition.

Have no spark. Changed coil & CDI box so far. still no spark. Is it the internal coil? 1989 enticer 400T/R

Hi and welcome to FixYa,
Initially, suggested checks on the wires:
  • black of igniter unit tied to ground;
  • orange wire from igniter to ignition coil with pulsating voltage when starting;
  • gray wire from igniter to ignition coil with pulsating voltage when starting;
  • IGN + 12 on red/white wire to igniter and ignition coils from engine stop switch;
  • IGN + 12 on red/white wire to engine stop switch coming from 10Amp ignition fuse;
  • pulsating low voltage from pickup coil between the wires black/white, white/green & yellow/red.
Postback results of above voltage tests.
Good luck and thank you for asking FixYa. Happy Holidays.
