The lens is stuck open, and reads 'lens error' yet nothing seems to help it. It had been working fine, I went to take a photo and it stuck and came up wit the 'lens error' message. It seems to be permanently broken and it's only 4 months old. Help?!
Dont know if this will help anyone. I had a lens error for ages. In my long lasting devotion to google serk I found that many equall contenders found that a strike with a soft book in different directiions solved the problem. I ended up beating the camera from all angles with the palm of my hand. But hey! it worked. 4 months later im looking for the cure to system error 2. If you can help wi that one.
I have been getting the Lens Error message on my Coolpix L6 every time I turn it on. I was about ready to trash it when I decided to Google for a solution. When I read the post about giving it a "whack" I admit at first I thought that was not too smart. However, I had a camera that was of no use so I figured what the heck. IT WORKED! I'm no camera technician and don't know if it will work for everyone but I'm telling you it worked for me. I just held it in one hand and hit it against the palm of my other hand on each side. Pressed the power button and Whalaaah. If you're like me, you got nothing to lose. Give it a try and good luck.
It worked!!!
AHHH!!!! I Dropped My Camera On The Floor And I Went To See If Everything Was All Right!! I turned it on and it read lens error and it made a weird noise... I dont wanna whack it to hard to break it...... WHAT SHOULD I DO!!!
Wow, whacking it with a softcover book worked for me too, but now the lens cover is sort of loose and doesn't close very much when the lens retracts.
still, at least the camera fully works.
FYI, whacking the sides of the extended lens worked. I used a soft book and sure enough the lens retracted. Good luck!

I had the same problem with mine. There seems to be a problem with the lens gear. If it is less then one year old Nikon will fix it under warranty.
My P60 does this every time I take video. The solution is to open the bottom of the camera and wiggle the batteries or tip them out - even a little bit and then shut the bottom and the lens will go in. Its fine until you try another video but the solution is the same.
Fantastic tip. A few gentle whacks with a light-ish book and it's as good as new! Love this sort of low-tech solution!
I hit it front and back, but the most effective hit was the one right onto the extended lens. Worked a treat!

I have this exact same issue!
Hey i had the same problem with mine if the lens is stuck open trying pushing it in put not to hard otherwise call canon they will tell you where to send it
My camera has the same problem. I dropped on the floor while its on so what I did is, pull the lens forward then turn it off. Then turn it back on it and it worked. So hopefully that helps.
I thought my camera was broken forever but that worked! Thanks!

I had taken alot of photos, had the camera in a case, when I got ready to taek it out - the lens was open - and stuck... I cannot get it to go in - It registers a Lens Failure - but it will not budge. Tried different batteries, it just makes a noise, and won't close. So of course, it is unuseable. I have only had the camera 8 months... and it seems like a major problem.
I have the same error message, but rather than being stuck open, when the camera is turned on my lens extends, retracts, partially extends again, and then finally retracts and stays retracted with the error message displayed.
Since it seems to extend OK perhaps it's not a gear problem like others have reported, or else it's a different manifestation of the same underlying problem.
lens will not retract getting lens error message
