Convergence I have a Samsung HCN4226W rear projection TV. Red and blue seem to be normal and can be adjusted. Green has pincushion effect from top and bottom on the screen. The ?Perfect Focus? function does not work at all (resets immediately after starting). All resistors near the STKs area are good. What do I have to do to fix this problem? Replace STK392-040? Thank you!

This is an indication that the STK is bad. The PC board should be marked to indicate which one if for the green.

I had a 3d effect in my tv and a repair man came out to fix it. but my tv still has color issues. what settings can I use to correct the color> its a samsung (hcn4226w)

All projection TV sets have two very common problems. One is convergence ( 3D/Warped video or dead set) the other is CRT fluid ( Dull Video). Here are more details and solutions for both.

Common Problem #1) Convergence has gone out

Projection TV sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the video to look normal. When its out of alignment the video will look 3D, wavy, distorted, etc. In some cases the TV will also not show any video. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the TV menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.

This is a very common failure on these projection sets and a fairly simple DIY fix. All projection sets including Samsung, RCA, Sony, Philip Magnavox, Panasonic, Pioneer, Akai, GE, JVC, Toshiba, and others at some point will have the same problem.

Common Symptoms include....

  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.
  • TV shuts off after powering on. Power light will blink. TV may also make a chirping noise.
Here are some pics of convergence problems.

Common Problem #2) CRT Fluid is Cloudy

Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.

Blue ghost

Replace convergence IC'S and check values of convergence circuit resistors.

One color Bow-tie Effect.

SAMSUNG Convergence Problem

It looks like blue convergence. Look at menu, select convergence and see if blue top is bent down on convergence adjust screen. Probably won’t adjust.

Some Samsungs have convergence IC’s on a separate convergence board in the back of the TV. Others have the IC’s mounted on the main deflection board. Either way the board has to be removed to get at the dud IC’s and associated burnt resistors.

You remove the appropriate board, determine if any resistors are burnt or damaged, replace any burnt or out of tolerance resistors, replace 1 or 2 IC's and re-install the board.

Now you have to adjust it to look like new.

If the unit has not been misadjusted and everything is OK now, running the auto focus may put the picture back to it’s previous stunning quality as it was before IC failed.

If after Perfect Focus it is still misadjusted noticeably, try the customer convergence adjustments. Operators’ manuals are available on web through searching.

If convergence can not be adjusted properly, you messed up chip install or resistors may be wrong value or open; or it needs major adjustment.

If you live around Calgary, Alberta try me instead:

Or try to the find the repairperson part of this website (on the Homepage) and search postal code. Maybe you will be lucky and someone from your area is listed for Projection TV repair.

Most rookies doing this job will cause damage and not be successful. They will pay double for someone to fix their mess or end up scrapping the TV. It is not a simple task. It is more difficult than batteries on a remote.

Good Luck

sounds like the alignment of the convergence in that area needs to be preformed or you have a speaker or something in that corner

My blue color is off...HCN4226W.

If the blue is shifted away from the rest of the picture and maybe bowed then try the manual convergence adjustment. My guess is the red will move but the blue won't. If I'm correct call a tech unless you are a skilled solderer, then replace the large STK amps in the Convergence circuit and check all of the resistors in the circuit. Good Luck.

Pincushion Picture on a big TV screen!!!

The set has 3 IC's(one for each color)strictly dedicated for the aligment of each color,if one them does not align is because is going bad or is already bad becuase picture can not be adjusted, the IC's can be identify because they are mounted on a heat sink and have the markings STK--- ---,they are all the same and need to be replaced with an exact replacement. If you are familiar with tv service you can replace them, sometimes the new ones need to be aligned from the service menu, you will need the service manual, soldering and unsoldering will be involved,If you are not too familiar be safe and seek the assistance of a servicer.
