Recovering files from a bad drive using external hdd enclosureh
Hi. I need to access files from my laptop hdd, which gave me an error 'Operating System not found' during reboot. I put the 'problem' hdd into a Vantec NexStar SX 2.5 external hdd enclosure, connecting to USB ports of another laptop running Win XP. In 'my computer' I see the 'problem hdd' as Drive E: Local Drive with 26.4GB capacity, healthy (Active) status when viewing under 'computer management'. However, I can't see any files under this 'problem drive'. When I click on drive E, I get the message asking me to format the drive. Since I want to access the files from this disk, I click 'no'. Can you suggest a way to access the files from this disk? Thanks.

Hi,
I usually use GetDataBack (2 versions FAT and NTFS). I have used this program to recover files from HDs similarly connected (external case > USB).
The freeware versions will allow you only a limited number of files at a time, the paid version will allow you to recover all (including purposely deleted files).
There are similar programs/freeware but my experience with GetDataBack has been super so far that I really have no reason to look for another one.
Pls refer to the 2nd image on this link where GTB was recovering files from an HD that is not even recognized by Windows XP in "My Computer".

Hope this be of some help/idea. Post back how things are or should you need further information.
Good luck and kind regards.

the drive could be potentially corrupt.
plug in your HDD and run recurrva and try to recover files if you cant do that remove the HDD from the caddy and plug into a PC and test if you can access your files if not reformat by right clicking on the drive in my computer (ntfs is recommended) you will loose all data but you may be able to recover your HDD
try other usb port, or other computer and see whether the hdd is detected. If still not, try to go to device manager ( http://www.computerhope.com/issues/ch000833.htm ), and then assign a drive letter to the hdd. After that, try to access it from Computer, if not able to access it, format it (use quick format) and then use this file recovery program called asoftech data recovery to recover your files. http://www.asoftech.com/adr/

Hi
1. Start > Run > type in cmd then click OK to get a command prompt. 2. Type in chkdsk e: /r (replace e: with the drive letter of your external hard drive).
This won't do any harm, it will fix errors on the disk and try to recover data from bad sectors. It might not solve the problem but it's worth a try.
