I formatted my hard-drive and re-installed Windows XP Professional and now I can't connect to the internet because I don't have the drivers for my ethernet controller. I don't have a CD containing the drivers either.

What's your OS? Win XP, Linux...what? If those are installed correctly, they should automatically find the drivers or prompt you to put in the software disk for it. If WinXP Go to Control panel > System > Hardware Look for any "yellow !" and remove them. Shut down and restart. Should solve your problem.

SOURCE: ethernet driver

Note the Service Tag of the the PC and access the Dell website from another PC. Go into the support section of Dell website, select Download Drivers, and enter the service tag of your PC.

You should be able to find the ethernet driver for it (if there are 2 or more download both and save to a CD or USB memory stick.

Now go to your Dell. You should be able to run the program from the USB stick and it will restore the Ethernet connection.

Do the same for other drivers you need, sound, graphics, etc.

I recently formated my hard drive on my dimension 5150 now i can't connect to the internet to update the puter because i can find the ethernet driver

Find a computer with internet access and type http://ftp.us.dell.com/network/R105478.EXE into the browser. It will prompt a download for your network card. Burn it to a CD or copy to USB drive. Then take to your computer and run the file and your ethernet card will be working. This is for the ethernet card on your motherboard. If you have an aftermarket one as well this will get you on your way.

Ethernet not working after format and xp reinstall

Right-click the My Computer icon and select Manage, then go to the Device Manager in the list on the left and find the Network Adapter from the list on the right, right-click Network Adapter and select Uninstall. When you reboot, XP should find the Adapter and reinstall it automatically. Another reboot may be required.

If it still will not connect, go to the NIC Manufacturer's website and download the driver to removable media. The Driver Update option can be accessed in the Device Manager, but this time select Properties when you right-click the Network Adapter, and go to the Driver tab.
