The tv will shut itself down (but the red light stays on) after a while. Sometimes it takes longer than others. It will not come back on until you turn it off and wait a while. If I just leave the tv on after it shuts down, the red light will begin to blink.

well..the control board has this sort of issue. sometimes, if you turn if off long enough to reset itself, this may clear..otherwise, it's a replacement of a non inexpensive component..
Your unit has some sort
of PSU fault, or a problem that is shutting down the Power Supply
Unit, PSU. This happens so that no further damage, and possible fire will
occur. The sound is it starting up, shutting down, over and over. You need to take the unit to a reputable service
centre/man and ask for a firm "Quote" for the work to be done.
It's likely that the TV will require service since your troubleshooting steps didn't resolve the problem. If your TV is smaller than 30", you may carry it in to the retailer of purchase for repairs. Otherwise, service for your TV can be obtained by calling 1-888-237-8289 in the U.S. or 1-866-237-8289 in Canada.
