I have a mitsubishi tv, about 32 or more inches, and out of nowhere, when it's put on it projects a hissing sound and looks like lightening on the screen. you can see images very slightly, but it's mostly lightening like. it's connected to a direct tv satellite, but i'm not so sure that's the issue. any thoughts?

Tv "LAMP" LED light indication on the tv frame word light up or blinking LED light.Check the tv projection Lamp first. The tv projection Lamp might litterly broken into glasses sharts itself. The tv projection lamp still intact, still should be change too though. After the tv projection lamp has been change the tv should work now.If still have problems the board that call the Balast board probally dead too.Becauuse this Ballast board only jobs are to help to ignite and keep tv projetion lamp light up and to work only.
Take out the sweep board ( the one on the left from the back ). Disconnect eleven leads and flip the board over. Look for a bad solder connection on the left... if it's there it will be pretty obvious.
It MAY fix the problem, and may not. Part is about $300, if I recall correctly. You have to make a decision on pretty much whether you're all in on this TV or not. If the convergence fix does not work, it may be other things. A professional TV tech may be able to give you further guidance.
If it were me (and obviously it is not)... I'd put the money towards a 32 or 37 inch flat panel. Or larger, if your budget allows.
Sounds like you have the TV in the "close caption " mode (text), turn off. 2. Check batteries and the mode the remote is in; eg TV, VCR, Cable & ect. Good Luck, big IRISH.
