Question about Brother MFC-3220C Plain Paper Inkjet Fax

Open Question

Paper problem I received this fax/printer/copier/scanner from someone who was recycling it. They did not know if it worked or not. I did get the user's manual, but not the CD-Rom. So I downloaded the software from manufacturer's site last night. I plugged in the MFC to the computer and everything went well. Then, when I tried to set it all up, I kept getting a message that the yellow ink cartridge was empty. This morning I bought a new cartridge and replaced it. When I try to print a test page or copy anything, it keeps telling me to reload the paper again and then press start. When I reload and press start, the LED says Normal 100% 01 and then doesn't do anything else. So I try to print the test page again and come up with the same error. I try to copy something and come up with the same error. I have reloaded the paper, tried different paper, took the paper tray on and off and reloaded the paper, and on and on. Nothing fixes the problem. Brother's support people tell me to take it to an official repair shop, but when I called they tell me it's $75 just to diagnose the problem plus more for whatever they have to fix. They suggested it might be a damaged paper sensor. Is there a cheaper way to fix this? Or any other suggestions?

SOURCE: Brother MFC 8220 has a red ligth with an error

I had the same issue, but it was a little more serious. The Black Lever, which is part of the 'Paper Tray Empty' sensor, had been twisted so hard, that the flag for the Beam-Of-Light sensor was out of position. To the left of the lever is a small black cover. I took out the screw holding it place, and inside was a small PCB with the BOL mounted to it. I moved it down, so that the 'flag' could swing back into position, pointing towards the rear of the machine. I put the PCB back, and screwed the cover back on. The lever then moved up and down with ease. Putting the full paper tray back in, and turning on the machine, the Red Light Error was no more.

Brother mfc-7840w won't receive fax

The first thing that I would try multiple people to ask them to fax you.Sometimes the 2 machines don't "sync".This is a toll free fax test number that I always use to check my machines..1-888-473-2963.Just write the words "FAX TEST" in large letters on a blank sheet of paper..fax it to that number...leave the line open...you should get a fax back in about a minute. If you get a fax back...your machine is fine...let me know if this was helpful....thanks.

No problem, but don't know if the print goes face side up por down into the printer when faxing

Where you put the paper must be a little icon like a page with lines, if you see this put the paper face up. I am surprise you did not check with a fax recipient to see if they got it (Blank paper or the fax)

Need to know abt fax

HP.com has a web page that talks about the different ways you can send a fax from this product:

Faxing Overview

In general, the fax machine in the all-in-one product doesn't need a computer to work. It works just like a stand alone fax machine. You shouldn't have to scan anything in from the scanner in order to fax. Just put the sheet of paper you want to fax into the product's feeder and follow the fax instructions (see the link I posted above).

As long as the product has electric power and is connected to a phone jack, it should work out OK.

As far as legal papers, if you mean legal sized papers, it should work as long as the product supports the paper size you want to use. You can get that on the product specifications web page at HP.

Product Specifications

Once that page opens, go to the Faxing specifications and Paper specifications sections for the relevant details. Good luck.

Will not make a copy

If it won't copy, it is unlikely to handle faxes either since those functions use the same scanner. If your received faxes are coming out blank, then it is a problem with the ink system; if you can get faxes printed but not copy a document, the scanner may be at fault.
Have someone send you a fax to check this function (printing) and then try sending one back to check the scanner.
If either one fails, then hyou know where the problem lays.

Brother MFC 8440D

Look where you put the paper in. See if you can see inside there and see the roller that turns and picks up the paper. If you can, make a mixture of alcohol and a little dish soap. Damp a rag with it, and reach in there to clean the rollers.  See if the rollers will turn manually, but be careful not to force anything.  Another way to get to the whole roller, would be to start making a print, while watching the rollers.  As soon as the rollers have turned half way, unplug the printer.  Now you can reach the other side and clean that.

There is another way to clean the rollers.  Using the alcohol mix, take a single sheet of paper, and damp one half of it with the solution.  Stick the single sheet in the paper tray, and make a print, but hold on to the paper so that it doesn't feed through the machine.  Do this several times, and the rollers turning against the wet paper should clean them.

Try to print again. It might take a few tries. The rollers have to turn against the paper and dry themselves off again.

If this works, then you need new rollers (cleaning them will only make them work temporarily and the problem will come more frequently until you change them).

Thankyou,

Will not scan

With the power off & the machine unplugged, remove the scan glass & move the scanner a few inches from "home" position. Plug in & turn on machine. Does the scanner return to home position? If not, you either have a bad scanner motor or scanner cable. I'll look for you to post the results of the scanner drive test.
