When we turn on the printer it boots up and trys to print a welcome page or something. It sits there doing nothing except a message that says, "processing from tray 1". It sits there a long time doing nothing and then it comes up with a paper jam failure. It tells us to lift the top cover and check. We have and there is nothing. We have followed all the guidlines from Xerox's web site but we still can not get it to work. We have replaced all of the toners, the thing that is below them and yet still nothing.
We have had two repair men come out and try to fix it and have spent a couple hundered dollars with them looking at it but it is still not fixed.
Do you have any suggestions
No, it is for all the trays....even the manual feeder will not work. The third repair man told me that it could be the engine contoller board. Does this sound right? I found one for $95...is it worth it?

I have only gotten the error of Tray 4 I/F only after I get the "paper jam" error and try and change drawers to print from.
What happens when I turn it on is:
1. Boots 2. Loading 3. Printing welcome page 4. Paper jam
Then, when I try and chage the drawer it will take from, I get an error on that drawer and even the manual feeder.I have only gotten the error of Tray 4 I/F only after I get the "paper jam" error and try and change drawers to print from.

I final figured out what the problem was after spending a lot of money on Xerox repair service people....it was a stupid drum on one of the colors. When I looked at all of the drums on the colors, one of them had a plastic piece that was broken off. There are two little plastic pieces on the side of the drum or legs as I like to call them and one of them had broken off on the magenta drum. Replaced the drum for the magenta and it works!!!I final figured out what the problem was after spending a lot of money on Xerox repair service people....it was a stupid drum on one of the colors. I HAVE FIXED THE PROBLEM!!!!!! It was something VERY simple that should have been noticed by any professional repair serviceman...but it wasn't. We paid three different repairmen and final discovered what the problem was.
One of the imagine drums (magenta to be exact) had a little plastic piece broken off the bottom of it. The best way to describe it would be that each drum has two little plastic pieces on each side hanging down like Florida. One of the pieces were broken off.I HAVE FIXED THE PROBLEM!!!!!! Try to isolate the problem. You said that the printer is Displays Tray 4 I/F Error Power Off/On. Put paper only on the Manual Tray (Tray 1), just to force the printer to print from that Tray. If the paper pass all the way through the machine, then you know that there is no paper inside the top portion of the printer. Now repeat the same thing with Tray #2,#3, and any other Tray but not #4. If the printer works fine with all the other Trays, probably Tray 4 is the problem or the whole drawer. Check switching another Tray with Tray 4.
The only way to reset the image unit drum is installing a new one. The new image unit has a fuse which once blown it resets the counter on the machine. You can call www.iteminconline.com I have their information in my ad place. They are good techs. I once called for a 7300 image unit reset and they said it was almost the same as a 2135 and they gave me this information. well goodluck.

I am having the same problem. Sometimes my Xerox Phaser 8500 prints a PDF or web page fine, and other times I get pages and pages of what looks like PostScript code. I thought I had installed the most recent printer drivers, We are using primarily Macs with OS 10.4 or 10.5. One recent change is that we connected the printer to an Airport Express using a USB cable, which is sweet when it works correctly....any ideas???
An error code due to the print head, check the waste tray area for a spill, has the printer been moved lately? remove left cover and look for spill.
-Carl, please let me know if this helps.
Someone installed the "Printing Scout" on this computer. You may need to uninstall or check all the settings in the printer driver. I'm not really familiar with Macs but I know the 8560 inside out, upside down, and backwards.
If you go to the Xerox.com site and click support and drivers. enter phaser 8550 and there is a printhead update you need to get, You have to fill out a form.
That may be your problem since there is no fault code.
Inspect imaging drums for any signs of leakage or excess toner that could be falling onto the print as it travels though the printer. Any leaking imaging drums should be replaced.
Verify environmental conditions. See article Dealing with humidity, humidifiers. If the environmental conditions are not within the specified range, the printer should be moved before trying to troubleshoot the cause to the background toner.
Determine if any of the imaging drums were exposed to light for an extended period of time (more than 10 minutes). If so, then Replace the imaging drum. (Xerox is not responsible for any imaging drums that have been damaged by over exposure to light.)
Additional Recommendations: Background toner may increase, if printing occurs at temperatures towards the higher end of the specified operating temperature range. For this reason, it is recommended that the printer be moved to another area if at all possible.
In addition, very smooth media types such as glossy; allow toner to more easily scatter about the page prior to becoming fused. Try using a less smooth media if at all possible.
