Hp dvd 740

I put in a disk, and the drive doesn't even read it, or see that it's there. I believe the disks I'm trying to use are of the "DVD+R" type. This drive supports both types, and I've used this exact make and model of disk before with no problems. When I fire up Nero to burn an ISO, or anything else to the disk, it won't let me continue to the burn process, because there's not any blank media in the drive...or so it thinks. My OS: Windows XP Home Service Pack 2.

I had the same problem. I went to the computer store and bought me a new IDE cable. As I was removing the old one, I discovered it was half way disconnected. It fixed part of the problem. The other problem I'm having now is slow burn in time. About in the 5000 min range.

Dvd rom reading cds not dvds

Not uncommon issue with ALL DVD drives, it is often a failure in the DVD circuitry of the drive and will require that the drive be replaced entirely. There is no fix or repair for this type of issue.

PS. When problems occur with optical media, it never hurts to run a CD/DVD clearer disk through the drive. These disks have physical bristles (brushes) embedded on the data side of the disk that will dust of the laser lens.

My hp 4520 probook is not picking up the cd/dvd drive, no type of cd is visible in "Computer" folder or accessible. It does not automatically pick up the cd/dvd and ask usual functions like "open with"...

no OS stated, no CD stated, but asks...
there are vast types of CD disks, not one stated by you
what is ? whats on it , what does the label say is it home made CD
non of that can we know, and is KEY to the best answer.
for autorun to work 4 things must be good.
1: the CD drive shows up in device manager, and be OK.
2: the CD must be good. what is it, not stated by you. yet.
3: the autorun feature turn on via the My computer explorer.
4: the CD must have an autorun file, many dont.

so lets forget AUTORUN, (must walk first then run, LOL)
first as always it the DRIVE must be pulled in and not bad.
2nd the Device manager must show it as must next it shows, up
in Diskmanagment and last must show up in My Computer.
or in W10 that is now called. THIS PC.
Microshaft changed this name for local explorer 4 times. for kinks.
and sux that, having to tell that.

sure seen this 1000s of times.
and all ways from sunday , you name it ive fix it,
even bad media or media from China it this pure trash.

lets say the Device manager, shows the drive.
what to do next? well that is easy
go to walfart and buy a music disk
this is called a CD-DA disk.
this disk works on all optical drives made.
if you see it in MY computer and click it , it will play.
music. as designed to do .

one other thing to do us load the Probook drivers from HP
on the PC, matching what drive you have,
mine is a DVD drive, upgraded. and can burn DVD-R.
if you have windows install disk put that in,
now.
you can see files now for the first time if the CD is a DVD
and the drive is a DVD drive, you see fails.
if the MS orHP disk is DVD and the LT only has CD drive
its hopeless.
if you have modern drive you can read most files.
even MP3., WAV music
and watch movies on DVD.
if you upgrade to BRD, blue ray drive you can run BR movies.

Older cd/dvd drives many not be able to see or run
any burned drives, the first ones could not do that.
like DVD-r or DVD+r home burned disks.

again see if a real store bought music disk works (CD-DA)
if that works good move up to more complex disks and test.
if not the DVD drive is dead, or the drivers do not match your drive.
to match any drive.
remove it and read the number on it.
it has a tag.

so you said all type but do tell if it is a store bought CD first.
for music, not a burned disk by you or others.
a disc from a store, real, music and not scratched up.

got this one? there are many types offered and used,

My Dell optiplex 740 DVD/CD Rom drive does not read any disks.

You likely have a dirty or malfunctioning laser in your DVD drive. You can try cleaning the laser with a cleaning kit or open up the DVD drive and clean it manually with Isopropyl Alcohol. There is also a chance that drive motor is failing or the drive belt is stretched (Drive will likely make noise if this is the case). Parts can be sourced on eBay if necessary.

In my opinion. Just ditch the drive and buy a new one. It will cost $20-$30 and take 15-20 minutes to install. You could spend hours attempting to repair it and there is no guarantee you will be successful. These things are basically disposable now. If you want to open it up first then by all means give it a shot. You have nothing to lose because it already doesn't work and you'll at least learn something new.

Try cleaning the lens with a kit or alcohol and a cotton swab first. If that doesn't work, just buy a new one. It's much easier and possibly cheaper too.

DVD Drive reads CD's but wont read any DVD's

Hello,

Let me explain some things for you to understand what happened with the dvd drive.

A laptop (or desktop) dvd writter drive is actually build around 2 separate optical systems each specialised to deal with either a cd or a dvd type of disk.
A cd has normally around 650mb - 700mb.
A dvd has normally around 4,3gb - 4,7 gb.

But both disks have the sime size. So the larger capacity disk, the dvd has higher data density as related to the disk surface. Therefore because these disks are being read using laser diodes, each diode must be tuned to a specific frequency for each type of disk. A cd is read/written by a 860 nm diode (infrared) and a dvd is read written by a 630 nm diode (red). These are separate optic subcomponents (by the way, a blue ray disk and reader is called blue ray because of the diode that is used to read them, it's on 437nm and it's emitting blue light).
If your drive will read only cd's and fail to read a dvd then it means that the coresponding optic block for dvd reading has failed. The cd optic system will continue to function as it's not linked to the dvd part.
In this situations there is little to do to save your drive so you should consider the replacement or assistance in a service center for your problem. I'm sorry as we aren't able to fix this without having to dissasemble things and use some service equipment.

CD DVD drive won't read application disks like Photoshop, Vegas

Either they put in a bad mother board or damaged yor DVD drive. Maybe they even put in the wrong unit. In any case I'd send it back to them.

Record to disk

I was having the same problem and tried many different types of DVD-R (16x, 8x, even 4x thining speed might be the problem) finally went to the web page and downloaded the updated program. When I put that download into the disk drive the machine read it and the problem went away. Had not been able to use high speed before that either but it worked after the updated program was in it.

Check IDE cable connection. You might need a new IDE cable. I had the same problem, until I did the aformentioned. Hope this helps.

Reads all but DVD-Help PLEASE

When you say it won?t read are you trying to play commercial DVD movies or read DVD data disks? If you're trying to play movies then you need a couple of things the first being some type of player program. Real player works as does Windows media player but usually DVD drives come with a striped down version of PowerDVD or WinDVD. If you in fact have a player installed and when a DVD is inserted in your drive it doesn't play it may not be configured to automatically play DVDs. Try opening your player program and trying to manually play your DVD. Let us know if you have any success or if you need more assisted. If you do let us know what player program and operating system you have and any error messages that may appear.
