Here are some steps you can follow to set a static wireless IP address for your Brother HL-2170 printer:
Press the "Menu" button on the printer's control panel.
Use the arrow keys to navigate to the "Network" option and press "OK".
Select "WLAN" and press "OK".
Select "Configure Network" and press "OK".
Select "Manual Setup" and press "OK".
Select "IP Address" and press "OK".
Use the numeric keypad to enter the desired IP address for your printer. Make sure to use a unique IP address that is not already in use on your network.
Press "OK" to save the changes.
Press the "Back" button until you return to the main menu.
Turn the printer off and on again to apply the new settings.
After following these steps, your printer should have a static IP address that will not change. You may need to update the settings on your computer or other devices to use the new IP address in order to print.
using Internet explorer, example (192.168.1.1) check the router dhcp service for the ip address of the printer, then you can use internet explorer to access the printer and change the ip address from dynamic to static.
It's possible that it is losing power/clearing settings. You may consider moving the plug-in to another outlet if it's on a heavily used power splitter, though that's unlikely.
Another option would be to assign a static IP through your router, which assigns the IP addresses in normal circumstances. Finding the page on your router which allows you to set static IP addresses will allow you to input the printers MAC address and choose what IP number it will be assigned.
if you set the printer's IP address to static. make sure that the IP address of the printer is not conflicting with the IP address of the computer. and for your printer and computer to work properly try to access the GUI of your router. permanently assign the IP address of the printer, so that the next time the router updates the IP addresses, it will not use the static IP add of the printer.
Wow what a mess, this is hard to explain easily? All network printers should be set to a Static IP address. (Fixed address). Somewhere in your Printers network settings you will find this, it should not be set to DHCP... Your router is probably set to DHCP, which reassigns all address. Your computer will send out a communication telling everyone on the network the PCs new address... Your network printer will not do this. In your PC in the Print Driver Properties you will see Ports which should have the IP address of your printer, which is a TCP/IP port. Which will stay the same as when you installed the printer. When your printer reboots and a new is address assigned if set to DHCP, the pc will still look for the old address, while the printer has a new address. That is why the printer should have a static IP address assigned from within the machine The gateway, subnet mask should reflect the same as your network. (The gateway does not have to be in there to work by the way, if you’re using it on the same router) If you reinstalled the printer after your system rebooted, you probably have the printer installed more than once. If you do not set the printer to a static IP address this probably will happen again when it is restarted or there is a loss of electricity. Hooking a patch cable directly from your PC to Your printer will not work; it will work with a crossover cable and a few minor changes to the settings. USB and Network use different protocols. TCP/IP uses a completely different addressing system. I don’t think your problem was with your network, as much as it is with the Static address of the printer. If it is printing for you now the easiest thing to do here to prevent future hassle... print the network settings go into your printers IP Networking settings and set the IP address and Subnet as what the printed page is ( I usually turn off DHCP, IPV4, IPV6, NetBIOS etc, and only have tcp/ip on, if your machine offers this?)
If you have the network enabled 1022 you need to find out it's current IP address. To do this press & hold the Go button on the top of the printer (the large button) for 5 - 10 seconds or until the printer starts to print. This prints out the configuration page. The printer is set to get an IP address via DHCP from the factory, but once you have it's IP address you need to give it a static IP address. You can do this by typing the IP address into a web browser & go to the network tab. choose an IP address that has not been allocated already & apply the changes. You will need to type the new IP address into the browser if you want access to change further settings. You can then add the printer using the new static IP address.
i assume that your printer is connected to a network. if so, it could be that the printer is set to use dhcp for the ip address. and if that's the case, it's better to set the printer to use static ip address since there would come a time that the dhcp server (a router most of the time) would provide another ip addresses to all the devices connected to it. that could be the reason why you are getting a "no connection" message (disconnecting and reconnecting it at times would solve the problem temporarily).
here are the steps on how to set static ip on the printer using a windows computer.(Note: the installation cd can automatically assign a static IP address as long as the printer does not obtain a dynamic (dhcp) address)
- boot up your computer the normal way so it'll get an ip address from your dhcp server
- then turn off your dhcp server so that the printer will not get any ip address via dhcp
- reset the printer to set its factory default configuration (with no dhcp address) * unplug the printer from the power * plug the power cord back in while holding in the printer’s report button (it will try to find a dhcp server; after about three minutes of no dhcp response, the printer will default to a static ip address of 192.0.0.192
- then print a configuration page to confirm that the ip address of the printer is set to 192.0.0.192
- then press the report button (wait until IP address is 192.0.0.192 before proceeding. if it remains set to 0.0.0.0, check the network cable connection to the printer and to the network is secure. If some other address appears repeat steps 3 and 4 until the default address appears
- you can now start the software installation cd
*during the installtion, follow these steps:
- select the model of the printer that you are using which is hp officejet before clicking on "next"
- then select "do network settings for me, then press "next *follow the instructions on the remaining install screens - the software will pick an ip address in the private 169.254.x.x range (not available on the open Internet) and permanently assign it to the printer. it will also set up a static route to that address in the computer’s printer configuration
- turn the dhcp server back on by turning on the dhcp server by connecting your cable/dsl modem or dhcp to the network. because the hp now has a permanent static ip address, it will no longer try to use dhcp server to get an address - install the software on the other computers on the network who will be using the printer. the installation software will discover the hp printer at the 169.254.x.x address, and will add the static IP address in each computer’s printer configuration
Note: if the installation cd will permit you to change th private ip address from 169.24.x.x, it's better to set it on the same range as of the ip address given by your dhcp server (for example your dhcp server provides ip addresses starting from 192.168.1.100-192.168.1.250, set the printer's ip address to 192.168.1.59-below or any ip address that will not compromise any ip addresses that were already being used by your other devices)
hope this'll help you but if you'll have other concerns just ask me.
