SOURCE: C3140 PRINTER NOT PRINTING - HELP

How long ago did you purchase the printer? Does it have the "Certified for Windows Vista" logo on the box? If not, it won't work with Vista at all. I checked Microsoft's Hardware Compatibility List and it says the HP Photosmart C3100 series is *certified* with Vista, however it does not say it *works* with Vista. http://winqual.microsoft.com/HCL/ProductDetails.aspx?m=v&g=d&cid=900&sv=&f=86p&pn=HP%20Photosmart%20C3100%20series&oid=31 Per the link, the driver may be part of the Windows Update. Give that a try, as well as HP's website. Otherwise you may need to take it back and exchange it for a Vista-certified printer. Let me know how it works out!

SOURCE: HP OJ 5610 Drivers-? Can not install printer.

One of the reasons why you have the error message is that the CD Software you are using might be designed for Windows XP, ME and not for Windows Vista. You have to remember that Windows Vista and Windows XP are two different Operating System. Just click on this link and download the software for your printer. This is for Windows Vista 64 bit http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?softwareitem=mp-47767-1&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&lang=en&os=2100&product=441125

Remove write protection

what you need to do is connect your usb drive, then open a command prompt window (Programs->accesories) and in this window type:

diskpart.exe
and press enter

you will be presented with another window similar to the first. In this new window type:

list volume
and press enter

this will show you a list of all drives connected to your machine.

Next type:
select volume *

where * is the volume number of the required drive listed in the list volume section.
and press enter
This will select the drive for the change you are about to make.

type:
detail volume
and press enter

this will list all of the attributes to do with the selected drive, you should see in there that the disk is write protected.

next type:
ATTRIBUTES DISK CLEAR READONLY
and press enter. Once the window has finished what it's doing you can close all of the command prompt windows and your disk should be ready to use again.

Hope this wasn't too long winded and has been of some use to you.

I added a second HDD to my XP machine but windows explorer doesn't list it under "My Computer". Device Manager knows it's there and says it's working properly. what could be wrong? what can I do?

Hi,

You probably need to initialize the HDD before the drive will show up in My Computer. Right click on My Computer and select "Manage". A computer management window will open up. From the botton left of the window click on "Disk Management".
You should now see a list of your drives in that window, right click on the newly installed drive and create a new simple volume. It should now create and new drive with a drive letter and format the drive ready for use.
Once its done the new drive should show in My Computer.

Good luck and kind regards.

Micophone problem

Microphone might be in mute mode or the volume of the microphone is very low. I assume that you have inserted the jack of the Microphone in the correct port colored pink.

In Windows XP :-

Step 1. Click Start -> Control Panel -> Sounds and Audio Devices
this will open a window

Step 2. Click on the Volume tab and under Device Volume click on
Advanced tab will open the Master Volume window

Step 3. Search for the Mic Volume, if it is not there click Options ->
Properties and then check the box beside Mic Volume under
the volume controls then click OK now it will show in the
Master Volume
window.

Step 4. Then check the volume of the Mic Volume is full and there is
no check mark beside Mute.

If this doesn't solve the issue give me a feedback about the problem with much more details and the operating system you are using.

Volume icon in taskbar

You experience one of the following symptoms on a Windows XP-based computer:

* The Volume icon is not displayed in the notification area at the far right of the taskbar.
* When you try to add the volume control icon to the notification area, you receive the following error message: "Windows cannot display the volume control on the taskbar because the Volume Control program has not been installed. To install it use Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel. "

Therefore, you cannot start the Volume Control program and cannot adjust the volume and sound level settings of your computer.

There are two possible causes of this problem:

* The Volume icon has not been added to the notification area of your computer. (The Volume icon is not displayed automatically when you first install Windows XP.)
* The Sndvol32.exe file is damaged or missing.

Solution:

Method 1: Add the Volume icon

To add the Volume icon to the notification area of your computer, follow these steps:

1. Click Start, and then click Run.
2. Copy and paste or type the following command in the Open box, and then click OK:
mmsys.cpl
3. Click to select the Place volume icon in the taskbar check box.
4. Click OK.

If the Volume icon is displayed in the notification area of your computer, you are finished. If you cannot add the Volume icon or if you receive an error message when you try to add it, the Sndvol32.exe file might be damaged or missing. Go to method 2.

Method 2: Save a new copy of the Sndvol32.exe file on your hard disk

If the Sndvol32.exe file is damaged or missing, you must extract a new copy of the Sndvol32.exe file from the Windows XP CD and save it on your computer's hard disk.

Prerequisites
This method requires you to have your Windows XP installation CD.

To extract a copy of the Sndvol32.exe file from the Windows XP CD and save it on your computer’s hard disk, follow these steps:

1. Insert the Windows XP CD into your computer's CD drive or DVD drive. Press and hold the SHIFT key as you insert the CD to prevent it from starting automatically.
2. Click Start, and then click Run.
3. Copy and paste or type the following command in the Open box, and then click OK:
cmd
The command prompt opens.
4. Type the drive letter of the CD drive or DVD drive, type a colon, and then press ENTER. For example, if your computer’s CD drive is drive E, type the following, and then press ENTER:
e:
5. Copy and paste or type the following, and then press ENTER:
cd i386
6. Copy and paste or type the following, and then press ENTER:
expand sndvol32.ex_ system_root\system32\sndvol32.exe

Note: system_root is the path and folder name where the Windows system files are located on your computer. This is usually C:\Windows. If the folder that contains the Windows system files on your computer is C:\Windows, type the following, and then press ENTER:
expand sndvol32.ex_ c:\windows\system32\sndvol32.exe
Note There is a space between "ex_" and "c:\windows" in this command.

7. Type exit to exit the command prompt, and then press ENTER.
8. Verify that you can start Volume Control and that the Volume icon is displayed in the notification area (if you selected this option in method 1).

Hopefully the Volume icon is now displayed in the notification area.

Cannor Read DVDs

I have a similar issue to you, except that my dvd drive will only recognize a disc if I have booted up into windows with it in the tray...once in windows it will still think it has the first disc in no matter what disc i insert. If i boot up with no disc then it will never read it unless I follow the steps below.

A solution I found by pure frustration and trying all sorts of things is to eject the DVD tray and leave it opened, then right click on the dvd drive in 'my computer' and select the 'hardware' tab...then select the drive and click 'properties'.
A new window should open. Select 'volumes' and click 'populate'. Now close the window and insert the disc you wish to read, close the tray and repeat this process. Windows should now recognize the disc you inserted

Alot of trouble I know, but it works for me. Hope this helps.

What am I doing wrong?

Try this: disconnect the player from the computer, turn it off, hold in the volume + button, and reconnect the player to the computer while holding the volume + button in. Keep holding the volume + button for an additional 5-50 seconds. Windows should eventually go into recovery mode and revive the player- it will pop up a window that says Found New Hardware Wizard
