    How much would that cost?

  • testcase22 Mar 01, 2008

Hi, since this morning my Dell Latitude C640 won't boot:

There is exactly 0 reaction to pressing the power button.

No LEDs flashing, nothing at all.

All is plugged in, AC-Adapter light is a steady green.

I tried removing the keyboard, booting from battery, with or without CD drive and/or battery, with and without the memory modules, no change whatsoever.

    Any help is welcome.

Is there some kind of motherboard reset function?

The strange thing is that nothing special has happened between yesterday and today. :.(

If its loose where you plug the adapter in, its that your dc power jack pins have come loose from the motherboard due to heat/broken soldering joint/tilting it.
this can be fix by a experienced certified tech in a computer shop that can solder the pins on the dc power jack back to the motherboard.
hope this helps.

Try to remove the battery and then plug the power adapter only. If does not power up try with battery only and then if not your motherboard is bad. You can send it to us and we will fix it

Try it with all devices disconnected from the laptop. Sometimes defective USB devices will cause this. Then try it with no battery. This will isolate the problem for you. If it still happens with no battery or other devices, then the problem is either in the adapter or the laptop. If you bought the laptop new, then contact Dell tech support for help. If not, try a local shop. They should be able to connect another adapter to check the problem.

C640 stopped powering up

If it will not power on from battery or AC adapter, Either the power switch is bad - OR the motherboard is shot - OR the LCD is not working. I would suggest taking it to a local PC shop and having it diagnosed, usually this costs about $30 I work for TechSupportPros of Spokane, WA and charge $30 to diagnose computers.

Is the battery charging when you plug the power supply? If not, while the battery and the power supply is plugged in go to BIOS, that will be F2 when your computer boots up, from there check on battery health or battery info you will also see the ac adapter if it's detected if it says unknown try to use another ac adapter if it is detected still try to use another adapter. If you still have the same problem after trying a new one. You'll need to replace the motherboard

No AC, battery only, works in Dock

Try using the A/C adapter without the battery connected and see if your unit boots.
If it does, you will need a new battery, if it does not, question: do you see the led light up when you plug in the charger adapter ?
If you do not, you may need another charger.

sounds like a motherboard port. remove the battery and try to power it on again with the AC adapter. If same issue, try another AC adapter, try removing the hard disk and DVD drive if available, and test it again.. If no luck, request for a motherboard replacement if within warranty, otherwise, you will have to contact their sales support to purchase a replacement board

Latitude c640

This sounds like a voltage regulator problem. You should have it serviced. If it is under warrenty contact dell, and if not any major computer shop should be able to assist you. Sometimes they can get the replacement parts and service this in store, but more often they will ship it out to have it serviced if it is at all possible. This is not a problem you can solve yourself without a significant amount of know how in laptop repairs. Please rate this solution below, as to how nobody has yet to do so for any of my solutions. Good Luck
