Question about Computers & Internet

1 Answer

CD/burner is gone and Wont load anything i put in.

I recently got my pc back from the shop. and was trying to install my mother board drivers via the cd. I browsed the cd and tried installing a sound component, when all of a sudden the blue screen came up saying windows shut down to prevent a problem.

I start back up and my cd burner is no longer in the My Computer menu. Nor can I use the cd rom/burner to load anything. I can open and close it. but nothing.

I see many sites including this one. with a fix where you delete the lower or upper filters from the registry. But with my pc these ''Upper'' and ''Lowerfilters'' are not there. How can i get them back or. what can i do to get my cd rom working again?

Im running windows xp service pack 3....Apparently.

Ive done that about 3 times. all that happens is; it starts up without me getting any huge error or anything, but when i check the My Computer. the Rom drive is till not there. and in the device manager the exclamation mark is still there.

  • japmaicanese Apr 12, 2009

Double clicked the Exclamation mark. or..device rather.. and theres this msg in the General tab

"Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)

Click Troubleshoot to start the troubleshooter for this device."

As for the event viewer I do see some exclamation marks for certain things asking me to enable IPs, but one big error sign for something i had previously tried from the Microsoft site. where it told me that the "fix it" program does not work for my system. its referring to the "Delete upper and lower filters from the registry"

This is an exact screen of the folder. The Microsoft support site said if i dont see them in there it couldnt help me. So heres hoping i can get some help here. (i hope that thing can be zoomed into)

  • japmaicanese Apr 12, 2009

Edit. no..why does this thing make it non zoomable?.. anyways. heres a link. to the image. (imageshack)http://img113.imageshack.us/img113/1959/...

  • japmaicanese Apr 12, 2009

Sorry, Delete the what? Aforementioned key? where do I find that? Is there another name for this?

  • japmaicanese Apr 12, 2009

Is that the. {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-0800..etc entire folder?

  • japmaicanese Apr 12, 2009

Okai. If i did like you asked. Deleting what was inside that folder. Northing has changed after restart; and the rom drive is still missing.

  • japmaicanese Apr 12, 2009

Contents. Windows wouldn't let me delete folder.

Did it try to reinstall it? no. The device is not inside the device manager, but still says the same error it did before when i try and run the hardware wiz. "Cannot load device driver it may be corrupt or missing"

notes: I tried a program called Driver detective and apparently the driver is up to date for the rom. (just thought that might be useful info)

  • japmaicanese Apr 12, 2009

Well now the computer doesn't seem to recognize the rom at all or boots from it. not sure i can reininstall windows now.

A lost cause I take it. Alright. Thank you for your help thus far.

Try using device manager and deleting the CD from it, then reboot and let windows do its thing with intalling it again. Let me know if windows does NOT try to reinstall the CD drive or you get any error messages

If you use Event Viewer under Administrator Tools from the Start menu under Accessories,Do you see a message similar to "The following boot-start or system-start driver(s) failed to load:

    aha154x"

    are you sure you went to the correct key in the reg. I looked at mine and there are several that are close with most of the same entries, but do not have upper and lower, when I found the exact one it had upper and lower, verify 100% you went to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

the bold section is VERY IMPORTANT

OK lets try one more thing, then I will need to reseach this a little further. Go into the reg and totally delete the aforementioned reg key. Then reboot. See what happens. Let me know.

Did you delete the folder or the contents only? Did windows try to install the driver?

Pc wont load re-boot cd starts to load then flashs to blue screen

it is a hardware problem.if a blue screen appears on the screen while it is restarted, then try troubleshooting on the code mentioned it.
if no blue screen is seen, then the problem is with the motherboard id SMPS.you might have to replace any one of them.

First, make sure the onboard audio is enabled in the BIOS. Then make sure it's listed in Device Manager, then download the latest driver from the Asus website.
