If you don't have access to a lift forget it. Take it somewhere and have it done. Unless you have 5 hours to waste.

Start by checking the brushes in the alternator. The following link will show you how to check the brushes. The alternator is already removed in this video. You should be able to check the brushes without removing your alternator.

Replacing alternator on 91 nissan 300zx

first jack up car then look on the passenger side of the car to find the alternator. there is a bracket right next to the crank pully going to the alternator. it is only one bolt. undo it. there is i believe a 15 mill bolt on top of the alternator with a lock nut on the back almost out of reach from the bottom. undo the bolt and the alternator will drop down into your hands. there is the tensioner bolt to tighten the belt on the bottom of the alternator you can loosen it up to make things easier on you. when the alternator is loose pull out gently as there is one clip connection and two ground bolts on the back of the unit itslef. undo all of these and slide your alt out the front. it may be easier to remove the clutch fan on the water pump pully first. (4 nuts)

1993 NISSAN MAXIMA HOW CHANGE ALETERNATOR

Suggest replacing all the belts also. 1st belt, remove coolant reservoir. Loosen the pulley next to the res. then there is a tension bolt behind it. get under the car, the alternator is right there on the passenger side. possible under a small shield. Loosen all the bolts on the alternator, then there is a tentioner on the alternator. Loosen that, remove belt, then take out the rest of the bolts, along with the plug and the ground wire to the alternator. for the P/S belt, loosen the other pulley 14mm, and then the tention bolt is another 12mm.

1986 300zx fan belt replacement...can't get belts off

You need the release tension on the driven accessories, alternator, power steering pump, smog pump MULTIPAL BELTS.

If it is a single SERPENTINE belt there will be an idler that is spring loaded and will release the tension on the belt.

ALWAYS NOTE HOW THE BELT(s) ARE ROUTED make a detailed drawing you will forget it happens to me all the time.

Alternator in 190e m.b. 1990 model

It should be either just above the air conditioning compressor, or on the opposite side. It will have two wires coming out - a red wire ( 12 volt plus) and a black ground wire. The a/c compressor has metal fittings and rubber hoses as well as a clutch. No need to touch the a/c compressor. I changed alternators on my 300D models and 300 SD. They are very much the same. You will need to loosen the adjustment slider and physically slide the alternator to loosen the belt. Remove the wires from the alternator - probably a plug at the rear. If the car has a single serpentine belt the problem is more complex because so many units run off the same belt, including the water pump, fan and a/c compressor. Restoring proper tension is critical. The alternator swings in a vertical arc on a long bolt on the bottom or side that runs from front to rear.  Replacement is not difficult - hold the new unit in place while you insert and tighten the long bolt, then reposition the tension slider and tighten that bolt. The tension needs to be correct or else the belt will slip and squeal and your battery will not charge properly. You may need a crowbar the achieve the right tension while you tighten the tension slide. Instead of replacing the alternator altogether, why not just replace the brush on a round plate at the rear. Most alternator failures involve worn brushes. The rebuilders simply replace them and sell a "rebuilt" unit. Make sure you can get brushes and/or a brush assembly before you start.. Loosen the tension but do not remove the alternator. Remove the two small nuts that hold the brush assembly at the rear and slide it off. Replace with the new one.  Be sure you retract the brushes so they will slip back over the armature, and align with the retaining screws. Tighten them. Re-tension the belt and you're home free. I have done this on the road when necessary. Easier and cheaper than changing the entire alternator.
