If it's a built in, you need to right click on the speaker icon on the right of your taskbar, click open volume control and then a window will pop up with volume sliders, check that the mic is listed there if not click options, advanced controls and make sure it is not muted and the slider is all the way up. If you click advanced under the mic slider the option to tick mic boost appears.

if it's a seperate one then you have to right click on the speaker icon on the right of your taskbar, select adjust audio properties and then click the voice tab then at the voice recording drop down tab check your mic is listed and select it then choose test hardware.

Why doesnt my webcam work

Right-click on my computer, choose properties, hardware, device manager and see if the webcam is displayed anywhere. If not, you need to go to HP.com and get the webcam software/drivers. If it is, try downloading skype and seeing if it can power up your webcam. You may be able to do the same with MSN, but the msn webcam software is slow and ****.
