Sounds definitely like a failed backlight. Here's a link that tells step-by-step how to replace one: http://www.fonerbooks.com/laptop_5.htm

If it's too dark to see the menu to adjust the brightness, it's a bad backlight - send it back!

I have the overall yellow tint in my lcd monitor there are no magnets close to...

The discoloration problem is due to the near by magnetic field appliances like speakers which are very near to monitors ...
so what you have to do is just keep some distance to the monitor from the speakers and other magnetic appliances and then press menu button & just give degauss..

Exactly the same problems.. It's been repaired 2 times and last night it went totally black... Bummer... but the image quality is excellent ( when it works) boooo viewsonic.. Natalie

What parts were replaced, or cheap parts were used? More likely to be either bad caps in the power supply, or bad backlight inverter circuits, see failed VIEWSONIC monitors due to bad caps here: http://s807.photobucket.com/home/budm/allalbums

Monitor turns on and off

Is it an HP or a Viewsonic screen ?

Either way, looks like a power supply problem to me, some Viewsonic screens are known to have a problem with their inner power supply card, If your screen is still under warranty I suggest you don't lose time analysing the problem and just make them come and fix/replace it

Power dies when video signal applied

I fixed this problem by replacing all the electrolytics 1000uF and 1500uF on the power supply/inverter board. All were either bulging or had burst at the bottom rubber seal. This cleared up all problems and I am using this monitor successfully at this very moment.
