The instructions for replacing the keyboard include the cover you have to remove to replace the power button pcb. The power button pcb is attached to the bottom of the bezel that covers the hinges/button array. In a nutshell you just remove the 2 screws indicated in the instructions, pry the hinge covers up a bit, then gently pry the bezel up from the bottom. remove the ribbon cable, pull back the small piece of tape, remove the three small screws holding the pcb on, and remove it from the spring clips.

The next problem will be finding just the replacement button. The design isn't very good anyway (held on with some kind of adhesive tape). One online source has a redesigned replacement panel and PCB but it's around $100. The eMachines plastic part fits, but the button won't actuate the Gateway "on" micro switch (learned the hard way). The next question is whether the eMachines PCB will work with the Gateway.

Good luck....

How do you remove the keyboard on a gateway w730-k8x? it had tea spilled on it.

Sorry about your keyboard problems.

1. On your base unit, you will find this plastic piece below. Where I have marked a X, you will find 2 screws which need to be removed.
3. After you have removed these two screws, open the cover and lift the cover gently upwards. Removing it from unit.

If you look behind unit with cover opened, you will see 2 screws, ( one on each side.) The Plastic face plate has a 2 Ears the wrap around and can be clearly seen with cover opened.

Now, you will see 3 screws at to top of the KeyBoard. Shown below & marked by a X

4. Remove the 3 screws and carefully lift the keyboard upward at the screw points.
5. Once the keyboard is fairly loose, fold it over and allow it to lay on the armrest.
6. At this point, you will see the Ribbon cable where the Keyboard makes its connection.
Carefully lift the compression flange upward and remove the cable.

Enjoy your new keyboard, invest in a cover, as once you have leaked any wet material past the keyboard, its all over.
