Our neighbor has asked us to take her old (1997) Sony tv to the dump. The picture works great but there is no sound. Our son would love to have this tv to play games on and watch movies. Is there an easy fix? Or, do you think it would be wise to pay to have a repair shop take a look? Maybe the dump is a good place for it??? We live in a remote area and the nearest shop is about 150 miles away.

If the sound goes off too then there are bad solder connections, if it just the picture then the picture tube is getting weak, some times a picture tube rejuvinator can bring some life back for a while.
I pressed "Demo" on the front of my TV and it worked, I have an old Sony KP-53XBR35 VIDEOSCOPE XBR - no original remote and the Universal remote has PIP button but would not shut it off.
Finally it's off!!!!
