Cannot connect via ODBC driver to server with MIFI4620LE (Verizon) even with a static IP. Static IP isn't even pingable.

How can I make settings to support DHCP IP assignments and also recognize my manual IP's assigned to the LAN connected devices?

The easiest way I can think of is to shrink the DHCP address pool.

To do that, at least on the model of Actiontec router I have, click on "Network (Home/Office)" the go to the "IP Address Distribution" section of the screen. "DHCP Server" should already be selected, and under that, you'll find "Start IP addresses" and "End IP addresses." Usually, the start will be 192.168.1.2 and the end will be 192.168.1.254. What I usually do is change the start address to 192.168.1.200. That leaves over 50 addresses for normal wireless connections, and I'll general assign IP addresses from the rest of the range as follows:
192.168.1.2 to 192.168.1.9: routers, APs, etc.
192.168.1.50 to 192.168.1.59: printers
192.168.1.100 to 192.168.1.109 for other static devices. (I often find that Blu-Ray players, cable boxes, etc. behave better if they have a static address.)

But really, on home network, I doubt you'll have more than 15 devices that need static addresses, so you could set the DHCP start address as low as 192.168.1.16 if you wanted to.

I have an extendnet sx ESI-2811 Print Server. It doesn't work and I can't ping it when directly connected to my laptop via ethernet cable. It must be broken. Any ideas?

Use a crossover cable to connect laptop directly. Does your print server have a static IP address and do you know what it is? If yes, set a static IP on your laptop that is in the same subnet and with the same mask, then you should be able to ping it. If the print server is obtaining an IP by DHCP, you will have to set up and run a DHCP server on the laptop (or connect it with a straight-thru cable to an existing router that offers this service).

How to set ip of the router as static ip for my internet cafe

OK, it is NOT the "Router" that has to be set to a Staiv IP, that can ONLY be done, via your service provider, you Router/Modem, is a Slave, device, that gets it's address FROM, a DNS server, via, DHCP, now, IF your ISP assigns you a static IP, then you can do as you want. However, you can still use a dynamic, IP, and do the same, you merely have to have an individual, name, MY_Internet_Cafe.com.. whatever... & register at DNS servers, and that way whenever anyone want to connect to your website, the Name is stored on a DNS server, when the "Request" is issued. "where is so" and so..Then, the search engine, It looks up that INDIVIDUAL ID NAME, , and and regardless of actual "Address", will connect up the requester with the website.. then anyone can connect, and they don't have to know your IP address, they merely type in your "Domain Name" or Website name" and the DNS will do all the rest.

Can't connect to WPSM54G after configuring it

hi sir,

1. first reset the printserver
2. make sure that the printer drivers are installed on the comp.
3. use a w/l comp on which we can go online
4. connect the w/l comp to the print server using ethernet cable and also connect the printer to the print server
5. put the print server cd into the comp and run setup.
6. make sure printer server is near to router and there is no firewall on the comp.
7. the setup will give the ipaddress to print server if not plz assign static ip on the printserver.
8. follow the wizard
9. it will ask u the w/l settings to enter. plz type the exact same n/w name and security password.and apply the settings.
10.after that it will connect u to the print server and u will be able to print if you will not u will find an error to open port.
11.you need to open standard tcp/ip ports for the printserver ipaddress that u have assigned.
12. if u dont knw, u can ask the comp vendor.
13. plz also confifm that the printer is compatible with ur print server.

Hi i have an smc router and i want to make my ip fix(public ip)

IP addresses are assigned by your service provider (ISP). Unless you pay them for a static IP, your IP address will change sometimes. This can happen even if you have your connection on all the time.

You'll need to contact your ISP about getting a static IP address, or look at sites like www.no-ip.info which you can use to simulate a static IP. You register with the site and install a client program in your computer that updates their server when your IP address changes. People then reach your computer through the site.

Usually your ISP requires your network configuration to obtain an IP address from the DHCP server so you can access the Internet via your ISP.
Why do you want a static IP address?
Are you trying to set up a home network together with a wireless access?

HP Officejet printer

i assume that your printer is connected to a network. if so, it could be that the printer is set to use dhcp for the ip address. and if that's the case, it's better to set the printer to use static ip address since there would come a time that the dhcp server (a router most of the time) would provide another ip addresses to all the devices connected to it. that could be the reason why you are getting a "no connection" message (disconnecting and reconnecting it at times would solve the problem temporarily).

here are the steps on how to set static ip on the printer using a windows computer.(Note: the installation cd can automatically assign a static IP address as long as the printer does not obtain a dynamic (dhcp) address)

- boot up your computer the normal way so it'll get an ip address from your dhcp server
- then turn off your dhcp server so that the printer will not get any ip address via dhcp
- reset the printer to set its factory default configuration (with no dhcp address)
* unplug the printer from the power
* plug the power cord back in while holding in the printer’s
report button (it will try to find a dhcp server; after about three
minutes of no dhcp response, the printer will default to a static ip address of 192.0.0.192

- then print a configuration page to confirm that the ip address of the printer is set to 192.0.0.192

- then press the report button (wait until IP address is 192.0.0.192 before proceeding. if it remains set to 0.0.0.0, check the network cable connection to the printer and to the network is secure. If some other address appears repeat steps 3 and 4 until the default address appears
- you can now start the software installation cd

*during the installtion, follow these steps:
- select the model of the printer that you are using which is hp officejet before clicking on "next"
- then select "do network settings for me, then press "next
*follow the instructions on the remaining install screens
- the software will pick an ip address in the private 169.254.x.x range (not available on the open Internet) and permanently assign it to the printer. it will also set up a static route to that address in the computer’s printer configuration
- turn the dhcp server back on by turning on the dhcp server by
connecting your cable/dsl modem or dhcp to the network. because the hp now has a permanent static ip address, it will
no longer try to use dhcp server to get an address
- install the software on the other computers on the network who will be using the printer. the installation software will discover the hp printer at the 169.254.x.x address, and will add the static IP address in each computer’s printer configuration

Note: if the installation cd will permit you to change th private ip address from 169.24.x.x, it's better to set it on the same range as of the ip address given by your dhcp server (for example your dhcp server provides ip addresses starting from 192.168.1.100-192.168.1.250, set the printer's ip address to 192.168.1.59-below or any ip address that will not compromise any ip addresses that were already being used by your other devices)

Just a bit of explanation. E0 interface is for inside network (LAN interface). E1 is for outside (ISP or WAN physical interface). Dialer1 is for PPPoE (the "actual"/logical WAN interface). The 1.0.0.13 is ISP provided static IP address for the use of the server. This configuration example is for running FTP server, which uses the standard TCP port 20 and 21.

The LAN uses 10.10.10.0 network with 255.255.255.0 subnet for both servers and workstations. All servers within the LAN use static IP address. The router is configured as DHCP server to give out IP info (IP addresses, subnet mask, DNS) to workstations that are configured as DHCP client.

Basically I suggest that you deploy NAT (Network Address Translation) and PAT (Port Address Translation) to setup your own servers behind Cisco router. The NAT is used to translate the ISP's given static IP address to your local IP address. The PAT is used to translate TCP ports (the port 20 and 21) between the two IP addresses.

When using NAT/PAT, keep in mind that the Internet-accessible servers are seen from the Internet as their NAT/PAT-ed IP address (the Public IP address) and not the local IP address (not the Private IP address). This understanding is very important when you or someone need to test connectivity to the server and/or when you need to create filter (access list or ACL for short) to allow only certain incoming traffic from the Internet and block others.

Instruments used in this illustration are pretty much standard for running your own servers. Please note that IP addresses, username, and password are changed. However, you could always modify the configuration to suit your situation.

This sample configuration assumes that you have a block of IP from ISP. There is a dedicated Public IP address for the router WAN interface (the Dialer1 interface) and another dedicated Public IP address for the server PAT IP address. If you only have a single Public IP address for both router WAN interface and server PAT IP address, there are several ways to configure the router.

One way is to use the same command as shown in sample configuration.

This one configuration way is suitable when you have static IP address from your ISP and you know exactly what the IP address is. In this case you have the 1.1.1.14 single static IP address for both the WAN interface and Public server IP address.

When you are unsure which IP address you receive from the ISP, or when your Public IP address keep changing; then another way to configure the static PAT is following

With situation of dynamic IP address, at some point you still need to know the exact Public IP address you receive from your ISP for server connection testing and production time. To find out, you can issue show ip interface brief command on the router. You will then see the associated WAN interface Public IP address.

Static config

DHCP is superior to Static IP in every conceivable way. It is not any slower. However, when you FIRST connect to a dynamic ip router, your computer and the router have to handshake a bit, which takes a few seconds.

After that, they are at the identical speed. DHCP shields you from all sorts of trouble like colliding IP addresses, DNS server, subnet masks and gateways. It is way better and more reliable to go with DHCP.

Static ip is only useful if you *need* static ip, e.g. if you want to host a server on your router and you need the computer's dns server to stay the same.

That said, if you still want to use a static ip, here's how:

Simply disable the DHCP server in the router's settings. Also, go into the router's "status" page and take note of the DNS ADDRESS(S). You will need this later.

(Please note, if you disable the dhcp server, the only way to get back into your router and re-enable it is to use static ip on the computer, or to hard reset the router)

Then, you configure each computer connected to the router to use a static IP as opposed to obtaining it automatically. To do this in windows XP:

Go to start->control panel->network connections
Right click on Local Area Connection and go to Properties
Select "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)" from the listbox
Click Properties
In the general tab, tick the radio box "Use the following IP address"
Type in the ip adderss you want (e.g. 192.168.0.105)
Type in 255.255.255.0 as the subnet mask
Leave the default gateway blank
Type the ip address of the DNS server you took note of earlier into the "Preferred DNS" section at the bottom of the form.

Click ok and ok and ok until you're out of all the boxes. Your IP is now static, and cross your fingers. If you did everything correct, it will work. If not, check your settings.

DPR-1260 ... prints but cannot access web config page

To get into the web configuration you need to know your firmware on the DPR-1260. If it is 1.12, us http://dlinkps-xxxxxx where the X's are the last 6 number of the mac address. If it is 1.20 and up, use http://dlink-xxxxxx, where the x's are the last 6 number of the mac address. If you do set it up as DHCP or static and know the ip address of the print server just type in the ip address of the print server on the address bar.
