Is there a way to get my Toshiba Satellite pro 440CDX to conncect to a ethernet cord and not dial up

SETTING UP A BROADBAND CONNECTION (non dial-up connection)

First you need to decide what type of broadband and Internet service you require and these are -
1. DSL that uses your existing telephone line.
2. Cable that uses a cable service and can include a cable TV service.
3. A wireless 3G network uses the mobile/cell phone network and can be separate or combine with your cell phone account. This type of Internet connection uses an USB wireless device shaped like an USB memory stick.
Note - Combined services generally offer discount pricing and may include a modem/wireless router.

If you use a wireless router with the DSL or Cable Internet service then your laptop with a wireless card can then connect to the Internet. You can also connect to a free WiFi hot spots like McDonalds, Star Bucks, the Airport etc. using the wireless card in your laptop.
If you use the wireless 3G wireless broadband service, then you can access the Internet anywhere where your ISP has 3G wireless coverage. You need to check the service coverage area where you need Internet service.
Once you decide what type of broadband your require, then you need to check with the various Internet Service providers to see if they can offer and the cost of the various plans.
Note the download limits and the associated additional costs if you exceed the monthly download limits. Once you sign up with a Internet Service provider, their documentation will include setting up instructions and/or installation CD.

How would i use dial up connection to connect my playstation 3 to internet?

Why would you want to? Dial up is so terribly slow for just Internet browsing; I imagine for playing games online it'd be even worse (if it even lets you connect with such a slow connection).

That being said, you obviously can't direct connect dial up to the PS3. There isn't a port for that. Instead you'll have to do a work around involving a PC/laptop with a dial-up modem/port and an Ethernet port on it. You'll also need and Ethernet cable.

Basically the plan is to connect to dial up using your laptop/PC, then share the connection on it from the dial-up port to the Ethernet port. The PS3 would then connect to the Internet through your computer. Not ideal, but then again having only dial up isn't an ideal situation to begin with.

Here's some specific guides on the matter:

http://www.ehow.com/how_6515109_play-ps3-online-broadband.html

Here's some generic guides on ICS (Internet connection sharing) on Windows:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/306126
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-vista/Using-ICS-Internet-Connection-Sharing

Here's a link for sharing Internet connections on a Mac (if Mac's even have a dial-up port, I honestly don't know how old you'd have to go to get one with it):
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.5/en/8156.html

Best of luck!

I have a optus usb modem plugged into laptop using vista. i am trying to connect to the internet on my playstation 3. i have enabled ICS and entered the IP address, DNS numbers from the command promt...

Depending on if you're using a Dial-Up Connection or a Broadband Connection, the solution is quite different. If you are using a Dial-Up connection, the PS3 will have to do the dialing. In your case, I do believe that you are using an Ethernet (Broadband) Connection which is always on. In order for your PS3 to get Internet access, you will need to get a router and install it before you can get online with your PS3.

Ethernet connection

Hi,

Yes you can use the Ethernet port/card in your Pc,
your isp should provide the Modem for you for broadband, connect the computer's Ethernet cable to the broadband cable modem.

Your good to go
(( if you have a NIC network interface card ))
in the PC
All is good for you

Ps3 online

Dial up is NOT recommended. I honestly do not think it would even work. DSL and broadband work great. If you get DSL or broadband you would need your original ethernet cord and hook up the PS3 from your router. If you go wireless then you would need a wireless router.
I hope this helps. Good luck.

PS3 internet problem

Hi, best way to connect the PS3 is to buy a router, wireless or wired router. and if you go for a wired one, connect the ethernet cable (RJ45) from the PS3 to the Router,

Other option is plug ethernet cable into PS3 & other end into the Network card which will be built into the base unit, otherwise you can buy a ethernet card which should cost you about £10.
but you will need the PC switch on, whenever you want to use the PS3, as well as you will have to configure the network setting to get it working,,

Have a good new year

Internet connection

It depends... If you use a router for the Internet then you don't need any cable, just turn on the router and then go to the PS3 and configure the PS3 to work with the router. If you have wired internet, then you will need an Ethernet cable, but since the PS3 comes with an Ethernet cable, you don't need to buy one. With the Ethernet cable, you have 2 options. If your modem has an Ethernet port, then just connect the PS3 to the modem directly. If the modem doesn't have an Ethernet port or direct connection won't work, then you can use Internet Connection Sharing to connect your PS3 to the Internet.
