Turn the camera on to play or record mode and screen display is blank with lens cover not open error message. Lens cover opens and closes fine but still has error message. No picture on screen or in view finder. Batteries are charged fine and new or old tape used doesn't matter as error message is same.

Re: lens cover not open and blank screen
The problem of your camera is the ccd image sensor...better go to the sony service center for replacing the image sensor..i know it is free for replacing that sensor cause that is one of the model that sony recall produc and the cover not open error message is a poor contact of the lens cover switch...

Your camera is really damaged. For repair, the best thing is to contact a certified Canon repair centre. They can tell you if it can be repaired and how much this could cost. Then you can decide what to do, repair, or save for a new camera.

It is not clear if you are saying whole camera turns off or just screen turns off.
Notice before the camera went bad the lense does not extend in play mode, while it does in record mode. Many cameras have software that automatically turns camera off if lens cannot/fails to extend for some reason. Try to help it extend in record mode before camera turns off.
