This is from not enough HOT loads.

Fatty deposits gather between the basket and tub during COLD washes.

Then they are being released in large numbers when you do your whites on HOT.

It is recommended to do 1 HOT load per week.

Do an empty load with some degreaser added (like Goo-Gone) on the fullest/hottest setting you have.

MIELE W412 PREWASH INDICATOR FLASHING

If your PreWash is flashing then you have a pressure problem. You can dry using a washer machine cleaner or doing a hot cycle with white vinegar. If that doesn't help the electronic would have to be changed.

chlorine bleach is a highly corrosive addition to laundry that is not necessary... try Borax and Hot water. If the clothes sat in the Bleach for the entire wash cycle it would damage them and shorten the life of the clothing fibers considerably...

Cleaning the washing machine

It is recommended by the manufacturer that you leave the washer door open on all front loaders when not in use or the washer can develop odors, or begin to mold and mildew. Leaving the door open allows the tub air out. Because this is the lowest point of the drain cycle, gravity will always cause residual water to reside in the drain pump and drain lines. The water will NOT evaporate, but it will keep it from becoming sour. The following link explains what some of the common causes of odors in a front loader are and how to prevent them:

http://www.fixya.com/support/r3608512-getting_rid_front_loader_mildew_odor

Newer model Kenmore Elite, Whirlpool Duet and Maytag Epic have a "Cleaning Cycle" button on the front panel. The owner's manual will explain how to use this feature.

If you do not have a cleaning cycle, use the hottest setting you have about once a month with a small amount of bleach to keep the spin basket and wash tub sanitized. I recommend the "Whitest Whites" cycle set on the "Light". This cycle is only 48 minutes.

Read through the link provided and make sure you periodicallt check the drain pump for debris that can cause odors and make sure you are using the correct detergent. If you have any questions, please post back and let me know. I hope this helps you.

My HE washer doesn't dispense the fabric softner

Try removing the dispenser cup - and washing the inner cup thoroughly- run a sanitary cycle with whites and chlorine bleach mold and mildew likes to haunt these front loaders - be sure to run a bleach hot water cycle once weekly

Musty smell

This problem is caused because the water does not get totally pumped out of the outer tub and sits in the bottom of the tub and in the front seals. Eventually a mildew type scum develops and causes the washer to stink and also impart the odor to clothes. Even though front loaders do use less water and energy, all of them have essentially the same design and therefore all will eventually develop this problem.
Run a load with just bleach (about 1 cup) and white vinegar (about 1 1/2 cups) poured directly into the washer with hot water and it seemed to help, but this does need to be repeated about once a month or so...

but with your wife's Asthma tho you could try
Typically the cause is the machine itself, but occasionally the water being used in the washer can be the source of the problem. If the smell resembles rotten eggs, you may need a water filtration system installed. After you eliminate any other possibilities, you can begin the treatment process. Create a mixture of baking soda and vinegar. Add 1/2 cup of baking soda to 2 cups of white distilled vinegar. 3Begin a wash cycle using the machine’s hottest setting. As the water rises, add the baking soda and vinegar mixture. Let the washing machine complete a full cycle. If you notice any residue that has been loosened, use a cloth to wipe the surface clean. Run a cold water cycle to complete the process. You should immediately notice that the smell has been neutralized.

What is kenmore he4t button sequence for

If the washer does not come equipped with a "Clean" cycle, then run the washer on it's hottest setting. "Sanitary" or "Whitest Whites" will do. Hope this helps.
