Have Sony bdp-S550 blue ray player - movies stop playing approximately half way through and takes me back to the sony start up screen. It has happened with every movie we have played. When we select the scene from where we left off, it continues to play, with no more interuption.
We have updated the firmware.
Any ideas on what may be happening? Thank you.

It sounds like you need the firmware upgrade for your BDP-S300.
You can download it from Sony's website, burn it to a disc and load the disc to upgrade your player.

Use a q tip with a little bit (not dripping) of rubbing alcohol. Eject the tray, unplug, look for laser, you may have to do a little bit of disassembling, but have no fear if you have a digital camera at hand. Use the q tip and gently spin it between your fingers and lightly press against the laser lens. Let the lens dry and look for streaking,if it streaks, youre using too much alcohol. After cleaning, test with an audio cd,then regular dvd, then blu ray. If it works awesome,if it doesn't then the laser is most likely burned out.

Occasionally the software on most blu-ray players needs to be updated to the newest technology. The reason some discs play and some don't is because the discs that play are most-likely older movies or from a company that still used the "outdated" software. So the discs that don't play (most likely discs made with the updated software) won't play on your player until you've update the player's software. To do this visit, in your case, Sony's website for update info. There are a few ways you can get the info. You can download it directly to your player (if it has online accessibility) or you can request that they send you an update disc. Either way, most companies provide the update for free. Hope this helps, good luck!
