Hey, My almost brand new Nikon D90 has been messing with me lately, sometimes it says ''err'' on the screen and it refuses to take pictures. I've been solving the problem by taking out the battery and putting it back in, then it works for a while. Now, it's getting worse. I lend the camera to my mother and when she gets home and we're going to watch the pictures the screen is completely in grayscales. what is this? is the lens broken or something? I can take pics it seems, but not watch them. I haven't tried putting the memory card in the computer yet.
On page 256 in the D-90 manual, it says that this a camera malfunction error. To fix it, it says to release the shutter. I normally can't get the shutter to release and have to turn the camera off and back on. This usually clears the problem though occasionally I have had to remove and reinstall the battery.
Nikon says that if the problem persists to contact an authorized service representative. I'd contact Nikon tech support first at www.nikon.com and see what they recommend.

CHA indicates a problem with the SD card. ERR indicates a camera malfunction. Try reformatting the card which may clear the problem or try a different card. The card may be creating the ERR message. On page 259 of the D-90 users manual, Nikon says this error can be cleared by releasing the shutter but the shutter will not release unless you turn the camera off and back on. Rarely, I have to remove the battery and reinstall it before the shutter will release. The camera will not function at all until the battery is reinstalled.
If you cannot resolve this problem using the above suggestions, I'd recommend that you contact Nikon technical support at www.nikon.com and see if they can help.
When you see Err on the control panel, LCD monitor or viewfinder of your digital camera it refers to a camera malfunction. Try the following:
Remove all accessories from the camera.
Install a freshly charged battery into the camera.
If your Nikon camera offers resets such as the two-button reset or
a hardware reset please follow those instructions provided in the
product manual.
If these steps do not resolve the Err message we recommend having a
Nikon Authorized Repair Technician evaluate the Nikon camera. Click here for repair information.
Take your manual reset a little further...remove the card and battery...press all the buttons...leave the camera alone for at least 20 minutes...insert the card and then the battery...turn it on. See if that works.
Hello, The Nikon D90 works well with the Nikon AF 50mm lenses and most other brand Nikon fit AF lenses. If they are not AF you will lose autofocus and metering. Do you know that on the D90 the lens becomes a 75mm but the aperture stays the same, so for instance the 50mm f/1.8 is a 75mm f/1.8.
The Nikon D-90 manual addresses this problem on Page 256.
It says that ERR indicates a camera malfunction and can be cleared by releasing the shutter.
I usually have to turn the camera off and back on to do this. Sometimes, I have to remove and reinstall the battery.
In an emergency situation, you may be able to continue taking pictures in the manual mode but you'll have to set the shutter speed and aperture yourself.
The manual also says that if the problem persists to contact a Nikon authorized service center. Before doing that I suggest you contact Nikon tech support at www.nikon.com and see what they have to say about the problem.
