My Sanyo ShowerWave EM-S728 microwave is quite old.
1. Do microwaves leak when they are turned off at the power point (effectively not plugged in) ?
2. Do microwaves leak when they are turned on at the power point but not in use?
3. Is there a simple way I can test my microwave to see if there is any leakage?

Hi, you seem very concerned with your Microwave Oven "Leaking" & I would like to set your mind at rest.
Now whilst all this is possible, in actuality it is a rare event.
The manufacturers must meet very Strict & Stringent regulations regarding "Shielding" and "Protection" There are many safeguards inbuilt into the MO.
Also the ONLY time that anything is "Emitted" is when the MO is actually being used.
The Microwave Oven (MO) is for all intents & purposes is a "Radio Transmitter".
Inside the MO, there is a device called a Magnetron, this device converts your mains Power into High Frequency Radio Waves, in the 2.5GHz Spectrum.
These radio waves are exactly the same in makeup as ALL other Radio waves that are all around us all the time, and cause us no problems.
You are prudent to be concerned but please rest assured the "Risk" from any "Leak" is extremely low.. even if it did "leak" in the first place.
To answer your questions in turn...
1. No they do not...
2. No they do not.
3. Yes one can purchase a simple Microwave Oven "Leak Detector".
Generally the only place that one may get a "Leak" from is around the "Door" seal.

Recent Sanyo EM-P672W Microwave Oven questions, problems & answers. ... Mysanyo super shower microwave wave stopped working it shows on the display to press clock key but ... What would cause my Sanyo Microwave to not heat up?
Try holding down the Stop button for approximately 5-10 seconds. This is the industry standard for locking and unlocking microwaves, although your Sanyo may vary. Please let me know if this helps!
you need to replace the cavity cover "the cardboard like",the antenna bearing set "the gun barrel like" and the gear motor. If the "gun barrel like" is stuck up because the gear motor is not rotating excessive heat will occur inside the microwave thus burning the cavity cover.
This is probably a a bad door switch or door switch mount. Chances are only the fan and light are running when you open it, but better safe than sorry.
Opening the door while cooking (without first hitting the STOP pad) is the primary cause of door switch failure but not the only one.
I have a text file called "doorsw.txt" which helps in diagnosing and repairing door switch problems, and a file called "safety.txt" which is of vital importance.
You can find these files by searching at Yahoo.com (not Google) for this:

If you still have a problem, please write back with more detail. Be safe!
