Screen is distorted on the top and bottom

On the top and bottom of the screen, the edges are curving down. In the middle of the screen the picture is fine. As the image goes towards the edges, the top goes up and out of the range of the viewing area, and the bottom goes down. On espn for example, you can not see the crawl of scores on the bottom of the screen. Occasionally it will appear correctly, but usually only for a short time. TV is 6 years old, bought in 2001.

The picture projects the image with concave lines on the edges. I'll explain further: somehow the picture is distorted in a way that bends the four edges of the picture in a curved-concave manner so that...

Projection sets have two very common problems.

The first common problem is convergence

These sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the picture to look normal. This is called convergence.

When its out of alignment the video will look 3-D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired. Convergence problems are very common on all Projection TV sets including Sony, Samsung,JVC,Philip Magnavox,Panasonic,Akai,Pioneer, Hitachi,Mitsubishi,Zenith and others.
You can get more information and a DIY convergenece repair kit with instructions from the link below.

Here are some of the most common problems with these sets...

*Screen Looks 3-D
*Colors wont align
*Screen may look distorted or warped
*No Audio/Video - TV Shuts down - May also make a constant chirping sound

Problem #2 - Another common problem is dull or washed out video.

Your set may have one or more of the following symptoms....

*Dull looking picture
*White looking picture
*Halos around objects
*Red/Orange looking picture

Screen image display distortion

Hello.
What you are reporting is a problem in the pincushion circuit in the horizontal section of your CRT monitor. Usually this is from an electrolytic capacitor that is no longer willing to play nice with all the other components.
It is repairable, but get an estimate first. If the repair bill appears to be around $100, you would be better off to put a few more dollars with that and buy an LCD TFT monitor.
If you are quoted $25 or $30, it is probably worth having repaired. Just keep in mind that these older CRT monitors have age on their components, and once repaired, it will still be an old monitor.
Only you can decide which choice is right for you. At least now you have a few facts to help make the decision.
I hope this helps.
