Printer suddenly stopped powering up. Checked cables & power cords and all is well on that end. Same issue came up about 8 months ago. At that time, I tried the same things I did this time, and figured it couldn't be fixed and wouldn't be worth it due to cost. The printer was still hooked up and about 2 mos after it stopped powering up I went to hold down the power button and it started working again with no problems until now. Any thoughts? Is there a part that needs replacing? I love this printer, since 1995, it has NEVER jammed on me even once.
It's possible that the power switch alone just needs cleaning. Take it apart down to seeing the copper contacts and then polish the copper contacts with emory cloth.

I bought this printer the first day it became available, and it has been a great printer. I also use 2 Epsons for graphics. My 4L just stopped, no power, I cleaned the plug and it worked. I gess after all these years it needed claeaning. I sure hated the thought of getting rid of it, I just put a new cartgage in about a month ago. Thanks for the tip.

SOURCE: on & off switch
There is no on or off switch. It works automatically. After print jobs are completed the unit turns off after a few minutes.

SOURCE: HP Laser Jet 4L fuses
The fuses are located on the DC Controller (main bottom board). Getting to the DC Controller Board on a 4L printer is a very significant disassembly. Best left for a pro but if you really want to do it, I have attached below a link to a scanned copy of the service manual. Please keep in mind that the scanned copy is not a nice fresh PDF as most manuals as the 4L was made in 1994 and HP has physically scanned the printed manual for distribution. Just look up the removal and replacement of the DC Controller Board. Once removed, the fuses are glass buss style, readily available at any Radio Shack.
Gotta love that old technology.
Hope this helps you. :)

SOURCE: HP Laser Jet 4L jammed
Open rear cover. Press green release lever upward. Push paper backward (out of top toward back) When all paper out of upper roller, pull remaining paper straight back. It will move easily.
I'm sure this is too late for the original post, but it might help someone who comes along later (like me)

SOURCE: H P laser jet 4L will not turn on after a long
When its not using so many months, mechanical jam may occured, in this condition its draws more power when its switched on, fuse may blow off, check primary power section in power supply board, replace the fuse with same rating then try it...best of luck...OLD IS GOLD..

My 4L would not work after a power outage. I took it apart, cleaned the plug contacts and the fan and it still doesn't work. Anything else I can try?
I just bought a nre toner cartridge and would love to get it working again. thanks
Have two of the HP 4L printers, and suddenly one of them will not power up. Changed cords, same problem. Any assistance deeply appreciated.

How do you clean the power switch? Where is it, that elongated button on top to print test pages?
