On the side of the tranny where your shiftier cable connects to your linkage with a plastic piece that will either be broke or has slid to the side if it has only slid to the side and the groves on both plastic pieces are good then you will need a friend to help with adjustment to get it back to where it is supposed to be easiest way to adjust is to put tranny linkage in park then have friend move leaver and hold leaver wile sliding plastic pieces together to lock them into place.
SOURCE: 1994 Ford Ranger won't shift into drive
In 9 out of 10 cases when I see this problem in the ranger, it is the planetary gear in the transmission. It is made of the cheapest metal available. It breaks usually from going to park before the truck stops or switching from reverse to drive while still rolling. Just a Idea , But I hope it isn't that . Reverse will work fine for a while, and have no forward gears.

Sounds like you have lost the transmission. There are bands that clamp down to lock the transmission into the gear you want. They are controlled by a hydrolic unit located in the trans. The first thing I would do is have a shop pull the trans oil pan and see if it is full of chips of metal. If so you definately have a problem. At the same time they can look at the bands and see if one of them is broken. another cause would be that metal has gotten into the hydrolic valve body and frozen the drive band portion so it will not function. You may also get lucky and have it be an internal adjustment of the drive band. Good Luck, RAC
