Craftsman Garage Door Opener - Gears need to be fixed

I have Craftsman Garage Door Opener Model 139.536671 installed since 1997. This morning it suddenly decided to not operate. I used the emergency release handle and put the door in manual mode to close the door. Now I tried to push switch to open the door; the motor started to hum but the chain did not move. After a time the motor stopped. Then I manually opened the door and got the door to lock with the trolley. Now when I used the door switch to close the door, the motor started and there was screeching noise (sounded like the gears were not meshing right). Are the gears damaged and if yes, how do I replace or fix them?

Unplug the unit and remove the cover, usually eight screws, if you see a lot of white dust in the cover check the nylon drive/worm gear, they will need to be replaced.

Craftsman 1/2 HP garage door opener model 41a5021-3h. It is constantly making a clicking/rattling sound.

The clicking/rattling sound you are hearing from your Craftsman garage door opener could be caused by a few different issues. Here are some potential causes and solutions:
  1. Worn gears: If the gears in the opener are worn, they may be causing the noise. You can check for this by disconnecting the opener from the door and running it with no load. If the noise is still present, it's likely the gears. You may need to replace them.
  2. Loose hardware: If the noise is more of a rattling sound, it could be caused by loose hardware. Check all of the bolts and screws on the opener to make sure they're tight.
  3. Faulty relay: If the noise seems to be coming from a relay on the motherboard, that component may be faulty. You may need to replace the motherboard or have it repaired.
  4. Electrical issue: It's possible that there's an issue with the wiring or electrical components of the opener that's causing the noise. This is something that may require professional assistance to diagnose and repair.
Overall, it's best to have a professional garage door technician take a look at your opener to diagnose and fix the issue. Garage door openers can be dangerous to work on if you're not experienced, so it's better to be safe than sorry.

Garage Door Opener - hums for 2 sec, no motor action; what else could be wrong?

From your description the motor is bad. The opener was made by chamberlain and you can bu a new opener at HD. I had 2 Craftsman openers in my garage and repaired them, but realized it was time to replace them with chamberlains and never regretted it.

Hi The Garage Door motor runs when button is hit but the Opener Sprocket does not turn. Fixing suggestion is appreciated. Thanks Joe

It sounds like the nylon gears inside the motor unit are stripped. You might want to release the door and see if you can work it up & down easily by hand. The door lift springs may need adjusting to help the door move easily. You will need to remove the metal cover on the motor unit to see the gears and the internal components of the opener to verify the problem. It takes about 2 -3 hours and about $125 to replace those gears if you do it. I hope this helps. Please vote yes. Thank you.

Craftsman 1/2 hp opener clicks and grinds but doesn't work

I had a similar problem with a Craftsman opener. There are 2 gears that are in the housing, these are made of nylon/plastic and are built to wear out over time. My model was 139.53664SRT , the gear kit is 41A2817 and you can order the entire thing from Sears.com. If you get the housing off you can see if you just need one of the gears, either the drive gear or worm gear , you can order those off of ebay pretty cheaply. You'll need screwdrivers and probably some wrenches to get things apart and install the new gears, you'll also need to use lithium grease on the gears, that keeps the gears from eating each other up too quickly.

Craftsman Garage Door Opener Won't Open

When mine did this, it was because the nylon gears that drive the chain had stripped. My wife had to live without the opener for a week or more, but I was able to find a new gear kit online and replace the damaged gears. It wasn't difficult.
The other option is to buy a new opener.

You need a gear kit. Amazon sells them. I got mine at a Sears Service center. Beware that you will need to completely disassemble your unit to replace the gears.
