Dell Inspiron 6400 Power Problems

Bought Inspiron 6400 laptop in april of this year and in august i started having power problems first - when i press power button the power led on the right of the system lights for a few seconds then fades, and sometimes the 3 locks on the left light for a few seconds as well and then fades. NB " this is without the battery in the laptop".

My laptop's battery doesn't even hold a charge anymore... it's like I don't have a battery in it at all. The only way I can run it is with it plugged in... and the batter light constantly flickers between red and green regardless of the fact that my battery doesn't hold a charge...

I bought my dell inspiron in july last year. it was on when the mnitor became inanimate. i switched it off, but when I tried to put it on again it refused. the 3 locks led on the left and the 2 power leds all come on for a couple of seconds and go off. i have tried it several times, same result.

I have the same problem. I bought my Dell Inspiron 600m second-hand from Ebay a couple years ago, and in less than a year the battery died. So now I just run it without the battery, plugged in. But now, and even before the battery died, whenever I try to turn it on, the LED lights turn on for a few seconds, then fade out. I have to try several times before the computer finally turns on. Sometimes I've found that banging my fist on the area next to the touchpad/mouse helps, but other times it doesn't. It's getting really annoying...

Sounds like the power pin is either loose or damaged. . . .Happens from jerking or tugging on the cord too much.

Once you get it fixed you need one of these. . .

Could very well be the RAM slots as weve ran into it on these before as well. Try swapping the Modules around and running on one stick at a time. If its the issue the other will eventually fail as well. These can be reworked so the problem wont resurface.
Good luck!

You need to keep the battery in the pc - even if it's dead !! If the problem exists & the pc stays on - then I wouldn't worry about it :) If the problem still exists & switches itself off, then you should get in touch with customer support as it's still under warranty Regards, Freddie

This is a design to fail issue. Dell will integrate flaws into their technology so that it doesn't last too long.

DELL LAPTOP INSPIRON 6400 MY LAPTOP BATTERY IS SHOWING STATUS ( UNKNOWN ) ON WINDOWS & ON BIOS IT SAYSS BATTERY NOT INSTALLED

Here are my recommendations for this issue:

1. Reseat the battery.
2. Remove All External Components
3. Check the battery connectors on the battery and the system. Examine the connector on the battery and the system. Make sure that there is no physical damage and that it is clear of debris.
4. Remove All External Components
5. Try a known-good battery in the system, if available.
