Freezing up is caused by •dirty air filter or evaporator coil(indoor coil) •dirty blower wheel or blower fan blades •low freon •weak or slow blower motor If air filter and indoor coil are clean may be low on freon. Blower wheels seldom get dirty on window units. Pull unit from window and clean both coils with a water hose. Careful not to get any electrical wet. Let dry for a while and reinstall. If it continues to freeze its a freon problem most the time.
remove filter look at the coils behind were filter was. are they dirty? clean with coil cleaner, find at hardware store. is a/c slightly at down slope, away from filter or front ? if not tilt
thins that can cause an a/c to ice up
1 something blocking the return air to the system (dirty filter, something in front of the unit blocking the incoming air )
2 defective thermostat keeps the unit running past the desire temperature system does not cycle off and ice begins to form.
3 low refrigerant charge this causes the unit to run constantly and the room never cools off ice also begins to form.
4 defective blower fan this is will prevent the air from circulating pas coil and ice will form.
I HOPE YOUR SOLUTION IS SIMPLE.. IF THE UNIT IS NEW IT SHOULD BE UNDER WARRANTY GET IT REPLACED THERE IS NO POINT IN GETTING IT REPAIRED IF YOU JUST PURCHASE IT.
the filter up front is not alowing air through the condenser or the condenser is plugged up if the condenser is plugged up you can take a pressure washer to the condenser up front behind the filter and clean it out.
the front coil or evaporator is not absorbing heat from the conditioned space or the condensing coil or back one is not rejecting heat. usually this is due to dirty coils or clogged filters
you probably have a plugged filter and or a dirty evaporator. pull the filter and see if it is dirty. it should be lockated right behind the front panel. The evaporator is right behind it. If they are both clean then the unit is low on refrigerant most likely. if it is low it is probably more worth wile to by a new window unit then having a service man out.
Your unit is low on freon. Take the unit to a service facility & have it recharged & the leak repaired. Note that ice formation may normal if the outside temperature is below 45-50F. If you must use it in the meantime, leaving the unit on fan only will melt the ice much faster.
