Question about Princeton Digital LCD17 17" Flat Panel LCD Monitor

LCD17 Flat panel

No display. Get slight flash of image for less than a second. I have traced the problem to the HV board which has a bad(shorted) driver on one side of push pull trans and would like to replace the board. It says on it: Sampo qpwbgl9931DLD. Any way? I hate landfils.....Gary

All support is finished for XP years ago. The system is 13 years old and well past it expected life. Average is 8 to 10 years on a shop bought unit like Gateway, 12 years on a custom build.

I am thinking you probably have a dry joint on the board behind the switch as holding the switch makes the monitor work.

My advice though is a new computer running Windows 10, technology moves on in hardware and software.

Inspect foil side of HV board for burned tracks toward lower side of board. If burned, check HV capacitors (High Voltage Capacitor Test Procedure) and HV transformers (High Voltage Transformer Test) for a short. Otherwise test other components as outlined above.
Solution: Replace defective components as necessary. If applicable, repair foil trace on HV board.

If the operation is otherwise normal with the exception of heating food, common causes include; (to diagnose requires discharging of the HV capacitor) if you are inexperienced with working with HV I suggest seeking professional help.

Open thermal protectors or thermal fuses.

Open HV Diode.

Open HV capacitor

Open magnetron filament

Open winding in HV transformer

Defective HV relay

Shorted HV diode

Short or other fault in the magnetron

Short in certain portions of the HV wiring

Replacement Magnetrons (the most likely cause if not charring or defective components are found when troublshooting the small parts, can typically be had for around $45.00 just do a web search for your model number.

The convergence IC have gone bad, bad solder connections to IC or probably both. The board as a whole can be purchased as complete (look to the web to find where to get) and is fairly easy to replace. Unless you have extensive experience with component level repair I would suggest you take the board to a TV shop to repair. This option maybe slightly less then replacing board. Check with your local TV repair shop to see which option is the best in your area.

Probably worth fixing. Likely a component shorted and blew a circuit trace. Competent tech can carve out the cancer, clean it up, replace the bad part and blown traces with jumpers to repair the unit.

In my 20 years of working on microwaves, I have never seen a capacitor fail in any way but a dead short, but it's possible that it's failure may occur in a less abrupt manner. The internal structure of a capacitor is essentially a rolled up sandwich consisting of two thin layers of foil separated by a very thin insulator. While a "perfect" capacitor consumes no power, in the real world, things can happen to change that. A defect could increase the capacitve reactance or other internal resistance and allow internal heat buildup or expansion, which could lead to an intermittent short when it's warmed up a bit. After a while, the short could become permanent - sort of like arc welding, if you're familiar with that. So, while it's quite possible that this is the pathology that lead to a fully shorted capacitor, I think that's what you have, no matter how it happened.
