Sounds like the backlight may have faulted, but try configuring it if there is option to do so with gamma, contrast and such settings. If the backlight has faulted, check the warranty out with JVC, hopefully it will still be in warranty.
It is repairable yes, but in most cases, the repair cost is around the price of buying a new one give or take 15-25 percent each way.
The only way you can say for definite if it's a backlight or not is to open it up and look at it with an experienced eye. Not the sort of thing you can see straight away either. So "fixing" it may not solve your problem.
Sometimes it can be as simple as a loose cable from one component to the screen, but as complicated as a faulty inverter board (like a small power adaptor) to the screen.
But in any case, if you're a technophobe, it's a simple: "Buy a new one" situation, I'm afraid. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.
