This is an older picture-tube projection TV.
There are just a few things that can affect all three color tubes at the same time. One of these is "Blanking" and the other is the High Voltage.
Blanking happens when there is not a good signal to the TV, and the high voltage and therefore picture are shut off to protect the high voltage system. Make sure there is a good, strong signal to test it from, like a DVD player, otherwise the TV could blank off from low signal levels. A signal good enough to produce sound may not be good enough to keep the picture on, so that is not a good indication of good signal.
The other, High Voltage, is complicated and dangerous to work on and best left to a qualified technician to work on. High voltage in a TV can hurt or even kill you if you get across it.
Check high voltage circuit. This is near where the 120 volt cord is plugged in and a high voltage transformer, where there should be capacitor (or two). Check the voltage - should be 390 to 400 volts. If not less than 390, near to replace the capacitor.
It is not a good idea for electronic products to be in storage for long
periods of time. It is even a more poor idea to purchase used from a
rental center; the result is more often than not a very bad experience.
With no picture, but working sound, it is a loss of the high voltage
system. This is almost always failure of the high voltage
autotransformer called the flyback and/or the HOT (horizontal output
transistor) - which work together in producing the horizontal scan of
the raster system and the high voltage to prduce the raster upon which
the video picture is modulated.
The failure could very well be from HIGH temperature involved with the storage of the tv set.
The repair costs will be over $150 but not more than $300; depending on the exact parts that need replaced.
But: try the hard reset and the vibration/whacking test first to see if the moving business caused failures.
Hard Reset: Unplug for 4 hours, then try again. Do it twice.
The high voltage circuit also runs the horizontal deflection circuit
and much of the rest as well. The horizontal problems you describe were
a prelude to high voltage failure. If the TV is anywhere near 10
years old (how come you guys never give the age????) it isn't
worth the cost of overhauling the high voltage circuit. You might
be able to replace just the H.O.T. but the flyback is the source of the
The problem with your television appears to be in the high voltage power supply . This power supply supports the high voltage on the anode of the picture tube, and the voltages for the picture tube, and other parts of the TV. If you do not have a background in electronics, might I suggest that you have a TV technician to come to your location and work on the TV.
I have a KV-27V55 and when I turn the TV on the picture and sound is good for about 30 minutes and then the picture goes off, but the sound is still on. It will come back on after a while. What do I do?
