Now Ive plugged the fire wire cable straight into the back of the computer and its not connected to any other harddrive. Its icon is no longer appearing on the desktop and the orange light is pulsing when it comes on rather than beeing constant ( I have about 250 gigs of quick time files on the drive ..and am editing a programme on final cut pro...help is urgent
It sounds as if the enclosure has failed. IF THE DRIVE IS GETTING POWER, but not making strange noises, you may just need to extract the drive from the enclosure. Keep your fingers crossed. If the drive has been affected, data recovery may be the solution. Good luck.

Some external drives don't power themselves down because their power is taken from a mains power cable, rather from USB or Firewire - so it is totally separate. Some drives are designed to power off when they do not have a USB or Firewire signal, some are not. So if you want it to power down, unplug it. As for it no longer appearing, you may want to try plugging it in to another computer to see if it appears there. If it appears on a different computer, then it's likely to be something wrong with the OS on your system - it could be that you've had it connected in the daisy chain before and now you have it singluarly connected the drivers are not being loaded properly because it would've been using the other disk's drivers as it would've gone through the daisy chain - and now it can't communicate. If it does not work in other computers, the drive is bricked and will need to be returned to the manufacturer. I'm not familiar with Macs either, however if it works with other computers, but you're at a dead end with your computer, a surefire way to fix it is to reinstall your OS.
