What you describe is not standard for this radio. It should receive as good as any of the others you have. Are you sure you have all the knobs and switches set right. This radio is more complicated to operate than the previous versions. I personally do not operate one of the new LXs but I do seem to recall they have a RF Gain knob. This should be turned clockwise all the way. Look through the manual. You will be surprised and some of the features the radio has you didn't know about.

Hi,

A couple of suggestions:
1. verify that the RF Gain is maximum clockwise;
2. verify that the ANL or noise limiter is OFF;
3. pls add a ground strap from the body of the Cobra 29LTD to the chassis/GND of the vehicle or to your house GND connection;
4. Verify that your Wilson 5000 has a sufficient ground plane such as roof or metal objects.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.

Thank you for using FixYa.

As I understand from a tech friend of mine, most truck beds are not grounded well enough. Perhaps you could borrow/purchase a magnet mount antenna and locate it on the roof, for testing. Then you would have it narrowed down to the location.

Open up the back of the radio and check the solder joint from the antenna connector. I had same problem and it was this.

Cobra 148 gtl d has problem transmiting with covers off. trying to tune radio up. was thinking I need to ground the chasis

I would say a bad or cold solder joint on board somewhere. Bad quality control. Might flex radio chassis slightly while keying? A tooth pick and hours of probing around switching area on board and the pa section till problem found.

I JUST BOUGHT A COBRA 19LTD CLASSIC I HOOKED IT UP. I HAVE IT HOOKED TO A MAGNET ANTENNA I HAVE USED FOR YEARS AND FOR SOME REASON THE ATTENA LIGHT DID NOT LIGHT UP AT FIRST WHICH I THINK IS GOOD. BUT...

Make sure it is not near another antenna.
Coaxical cable More likely COAX.... moisture, pinched/bent, corrosion at connectors
The no receive condition if it is not radio is mostly likely center conductor find a ground be it coax shield or body
ANTENNA You have not described the type antenna other than magnetic. One piece or base with stinger shaft that screws in if it is the later clean threads an recheck. Move vehicle away from other metal structures particularly if tuning the antenna as it can affect the SWR reading.
I suspect you may just need a new antenna that one's coil or shaft may be broken not obviously visible.
Being that is an magnetic antenna i guess it does not matter which has failed since they are most likely made together. A solid mounted antenna with as much height as possible as long it allows for clearance will always perform best for both RX/TX.

I bought a new antanea 3 ft fiberglass with mirror mount when hooked to radio needle swings all the way to the red and i dont transmit or receive but when hooked back to old antenae works fine old antenae...

Mirror mounts need alot of Ground to tune correctly. Most mirrors don't ground to the door good enough, not to mention the reflection of the radio signal off the cab. Be sure it's grounded good and the nylon insulator is place.

I bought this from a buddy of mine then my other buddy hooked it up for me and the sound isn't workin and I think the speaker is broke or whatever you know. Are the speakers sensitive?

First, this is the worst radio Cobra ever made. I don't know why they still make it. Its horrible.

You probably have got a bad mic, or a break in a wire in the mic cord. With out a properly functioning mic, the radio will not go into receive mode. Thus you will have no sound.

I wouldn't waste money on a new mic for that radio. Instead save a little more money and get a cobra 29. its a much better radio. Also, if you haven't, when you get the cobra 29, read the part about SWR in the manual.

You must tune the antenna. If you do not, you will destroy the radio over time.

Just bought cobra 19 dx and wont even turn on

if you hooked it up backwards first, you blew the protection diodes in the radio. they need to be replaces.

You need to unsolder the old one and put in a new one.

You need to make sure you don't hook it up backwards ever.

Check fuse too!

Open the bottom cover, watch the wires from the speaker as not to pull them out.

Look towards the back right of the radio for a black diode that is burned up. If you have 1 that is burnt, then go to radio shack and get a diode 1n4007. then replace it with that.

And, be careful next time you hook it up.

Cobra 29 LTD cb radio

Strange problem indeed, this is why I don't like Cobra radios, they're no good. But try adjusting the receive gain on the radio, if that doesn't work, you might need to check the antenna, check if it is connected properly, or if the antenna actually works. Honestly though, if you want a solid performance radio, go Galaxy or Uniden, no Cobra. I worked with radios for years, and Cobra has failed to meet my expectations for a good radio, they may have a lot of features, but they have no reliability.

Sorry :(
Anyway, I hope this helps somewhat.
