Hard disk drives are not generally that prone to failure unless they have been used for two or three years or your computer is switched on 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Before you even try to recover your data, you need to make sure your computer is not causing the problem. Are you connecting the HDD directly with a SATA or PATA cable, or is it connected via a USB cable?
I would try the HDD on another computer first (if you have one or you have a friend who will let you use their computer). If the drive still cannot be read on another PC then you will need to find a suitable data recovery program such as http://www.aidfile.com/ or Easeus data recovery http://www.easeus.com/ and see if you can recover your data from the drive. I would not use your current PC for this process, but use another PC (or a friend's PC) just in case your PC is faulty.
After you get your data recovered (if possible) , the HDDs which do not work on your PC should be formatted and tested on another PC to see if they are really faulty or if it is your PC which is causing the problem.

XP, Vista and Win7 recognize this HDD as an external HDD but I can not see it in Windows Explorer. It shows up in the bar(down right) as external HDD is connected.HDD= WD Scorpio Blue(1 TB). Model=...

You'll need to check and see if the disk is formatted and recognized as a logical disk. To do this, Go to Start, and locate the Run option, and type in diskmgmt.msc or you can go to My Computer, right-click it and select "Manage" from the popup menu. Then, at the bottom of the list to the left, you'll see the Disk Management submenu.
Once you're in the Disk Management applet, click on the WD from the list of available hard drives from the list, and see if the partition is recognized as formated. If it's not formated you may need to format it. If the disk is recognized as RAW disk, then you'll need to first create an extended partition and then format it with NTFS file system. REMEMBER, if you can access the drive from another computer and it's recognized properly in Explorer, then formating it will erase all data on the disk. But if you never used it before (i.e you dont have any data on it) then you can go ahead with the formatting, which should solve your problem if it's a software issue.
If you heard your disk clicking for a while in the past, and you had problems with it: slow reading of files, sluggish in copying files etc. then your hard drive may be mechanically failing and in this case there's nothing you can do to save it. If this is the case and you still have warranty, return the disk to where you bought it from, and ask for a replacement.

My second hard drive (slave) sometimes works and

try to find out if all cables are properly attached, that in bios both IDE channels are set active and ide(hard/drive detection) is set to auto.
Exit saving changes. reboot and wait if in boot-up screen hdd is shown. Now you have made sure the hdd is being recognized from the hardware side.

Boot up windows and check if it is listed in the explorer.
IF yes, youre lucky.
if not, run hardware detecton and wait for results.
IS it now?
if yes goto properties, tools and check disk thoroughly.
back-up data, format it(long version!). check again.
(Now any invalid or broken clusters are marked)
Hope this solved the issue!

Platstation 3 hard disk error

It should have formatted with your ps3, even if you formatted the HDD on your laptop it would have asked you the same thing, since the PS3 asks you that so it can install some folders for the pictures, games music etc.

your problem could be caused by faulty HDD installation, a faulty HDD or a broken ps3 that cant read HDDs anymore.

I would make sure the HDD is installed correctly, if that doesnt work I suggest buying a new HDD. If both of those dont work then you have a Ps3 that has a trouble reading HDDs

VRD-VC10 says "format mismatch"

Check the manual - some DVD recorders could only handle certain brands of disks, and most will not handle Dual Layer types. Try Sony brand DVD-R disks (4.7G)

Cant partition, format maxtor drive

Connect drive to be formatted as slave.
to check if your windows sees the drive and is it active go to your desktop and right click on my computer -> manage -> Disk management.
You should see something like the picture below:
Your first disk will be Disk0 and 2nd disk will be Disk1 If you cant see Disk1 then the drive is faulty OR not connected properly make sure the drive is working with cables attached.
Listen if the drive spins.
If it doesnt then something is wrong.
If you can see the drive there then you might not have made any partitions onto it. You can make new paritions to the disk right there, right click on your disk1(your 2nd hdd) and create a new partition.
