I had the problem today and searched everywhere and only found the question posted about five different places but no answers. I'm obviously not the only person who has had this problem. HP's website offered no advice.

I spent some time with HP's "live chat" feature. Obviously not live, but fixed the problem.

Here's the discussion that solved my problem:

Von : Without turning the product off, remove the power cord from the back of the product.
Wait 30 seconds and then plug the power cord into the back of the product.
If the product is not already on, use the On button to turn it on.

Lance Goodthrust : did that

Lance Goodthrust : came back on and had the same error message

Von : Okay.

Von : Lets perform the steps.Von : Use the On button to turn on the product.
Remove the power cord from the product.
Press and hold the # and 6 buttons.
While holding the buttons down, connect the power cord to the product.
Continue to hold the buttons down until the color graphics display becomes blank, then release the buttons.
Use the On button to turn on the product. The reset information appears on the color graphics display.

Lance Goodthrust : okay, give me a few

Lance Goodthrust : printer is in other room

Von : Okay.

Lance Goodthrust : That seems to have solved the problem.

Lance Goodthrust : Thanks.

Von : Okay. Its alright.

HP c7180 message "Push output photo tray all the way down"

I have the HP C7280 and I was able to fix the problem.
HP seems to have 3 trays. The bottom tray is for the paper. The middle one has a small blue tray for the photos and the top tray is where the paper comes out.
Well I lifted the top tray where the paper comes out (it can angle up) and then I clicked OK on the problem. I may have even rebooted, but then I got a new error message which is good. It said to push photo tray (the small blue tray) all the way in which I pulled out and pushed back in. Then I pushed the top tray down so all is flat again. I clicked OK and it re-calibrated with no more error messages! Hope this helps.

Out put tray

The quick start says to load plain and photo paper - don't!
Leave out the photo paper and it should install correctly - then you can use the photo paper.

Good Luck

Photo Tray Problem Error Messege Prevents Printing

Exact same problem. My 5180 is used very little. I'm tyring to get in contact with HP tech support.

After going through about an hour of other processes, we finally fixed the problem by doing the following:

We finally fixed it by changing the printer back to default settings.
1.. With machine powered on, unplug power cord from back of printer and wait for 30 seconds.
2. While holding down the "ok" and "?" buttons, plug the power cord back into the printer.

3. Let the thing power up again and give it time to go through all of its process.

This should fix the problem if it had the same problem mine had. I'm back up and running.

AFter about an hour of going through other procedures before the instructions I gave you, HP tried to sell me some sort of replacement program. I told them that if it happened again, we would discard this printer and purchase another brand of printer.

Paper jam notice......make sure paper tray is pushed down.......error....

I've just talked with HP support and they fixed the problem. This is the solution:

1- unplug printer while it's on
2- after 10 seconds, and while it's unplugged, press the cancel and OK buttons at the same time and plug it while holding the buttons.
3- after the printer is on, release the buttons
4- if it does not start the computers, then turn it on manually (with the power button) while pressing the cancel and OK buttons at the same time and release them after the printer starts
5- try the copier and print a page through the computer
6-turn it off for 1 minute and then on again. The message should not be there now
Good luck
